How many can i expect?

one of my Platy's is having babies, I'm not too sure who, possibly my Blue Coral as I have a male & female. How many fry can I expect? This wasn't planned I didn't want them the breed, the tank I bought from was labeled female, but the LFS must be clueless.

I have 5 total ranging in size from 1/2" to 1/4" and only noticed them 2 weeks ago, is this small amount normal or are the other fish getting to them? or will there be more

They could normally have anywhere from 10-40 fry, I believe. The other fish are probably eatting some, some probably were born dead and others die soon after, usually. (just basic statistic say that a % will be stillborn a % will die soon after birth and a % will live and be fine)

Edit: I just looked at your signature, I would say the cardinal tetras are having fries for dinner.. (sorry bad joke )

Well, your platies are females, but they were most likely impregnated at the distributors holding tank, or possibly the LFS. But, any how, CWC gave you the answer you were looking for. Good luck!

It varies for Platys. Depending on the size of the female, i had an orange wagtail platy have 44. I also have a rainbow blue wagtail platy who usually has only one or two. She has had babies 3 or 4 times and the most I got from her was 4. She never got very ripe.

hehe awful joke.. I love it!!

The cardinals aren't that much bigger than the fry.

The one I suspect is the mom is quite wide still, so maybe there is more. I don't want to overload my tank, and have no room for another

well the suspect mother died, she was swimming erratically earlier, thought maybe she was going to pop, but she was lifeless this evening. There is 6 fry that I can see and i think maybe 1 more really small one hiding in the rocks, I see what survives and doesn't get eaten
