I've got two female platies and a male platy in their own ten gallon tank. My female white mickey mouse platy has got a dark spot directly behind her stomach that appeared sometime in the last couple of weeks. This week I've noticed a cluster of pinkish/redish tiny spots right underneath the dark spot. I don't have a camera at the moment so I can't really take a picture. She's swimming and eating fine, I was just wondering whether or not she's pregnant. I'd be really excited if she was! She hasn't gotten bigger or anything.

If she is pregnant, does anyone know how long it'll be until we see some baby platies?

I hope she is pregnant and that it's not something more serious.

If two females are in with the male and all are sexually mature they are pregnant, if water perameters and conditions are good. 28-32 days normal gestation period for Xiphophorus and poecilia livebearers. (Xiphophorus genus includes platies)

The dark spot would be called a gravid spot. The gestation period is roughly around 28 days so it sounds like she's about ready to have her babies so keep an eye on her. You will know when she does, she will be very skinny.

I've got a cycled and empty 40 gallon tank that I was hoping to put them in. It's been established for a few months now, I was just keeping it open for any new additions!

about how many will she have?

you may want to consider moving her to that tank soon. you don't want to move her too close to dropping the fry. she could drop anywhere from 20-70, give or take.. i believe that it varies a bit from reading different members stories here.

I'm going to acclimate her pretty slowly, I wouldn't want her to get too stressed.

good idea.. best of luck with her. this isn't exactly off a pet store sheet or anything, but i think lower light around her area helps too.. just anything that makes her more relaxed. looking forward to the fry pics!
