make a brackish tank

Pretty stupid question but I am not sure what salt to use? I had freshwater tanks and I had saltwater so I wanna try something new with the 20 gallon. I plan on getting 1 dragon goby. They grow a foot long and it says on 1 website I visit that you should add salt to the tank or you will have problems.

ok after reading another site. I am giving them my 29 gal and give then put in some bumblebee gobies. the 20 will be either a tropical tank or for my goldies. I am trying to plan ahead before anything.

For brackish you should use marine salt, not aquarium salt.
Brackish tanks are easy to keep (compare to SW) and lots of fun.

Ummm, I don't mean to be a stickler PFP.............Marine salt and Aquarium salt is the same thing made from evaporated sea water.........

...Marine salt mixes contain trace elements and stuff that the aquarium salt made only for freshwater don't......

thanks Pink. I wish I had some salt left when I had my SW tank up. I still have my refractometer but I got go through the boxes of junk to find it. What should the salinity be at?

You're doing a dragon goby and bumblebee tank, right? I'd go with a low brackish, about 1.005-1.008 SG.

I really like the bumblebee gobies but after reading I heard they are hard to keep. I have to find another good brackish fish to go with the dragon.

Hm.... well, make sure to check the size, cause most brackish fish get pretty big. And be aware that dragons are very slow to eat, so make sure it's nothing too aggressive. Good luck, I'll see if I can figure out any suggestions for you.

Hm... how about mollies? I've kept them in brackish before, they're pretty easy and fun. I had a silver/platinum one and he was just gorgeous.

I can do mollies . Are there any brackish inverts I can add?

I've heard malaysian trumpet snails can work in brackish. You probably wouldn't want any of the brackish crabs, seems that they'd make meat of the dragon...

I was hoping some red cherry shrimps but if not they can go in my 20 gal that I will turn into a freshwater.

I'm not familar with those... if they can tolerate brackish, then I think they'd be fine. There might be a risk of mollies eating them... but other than that I see no problems.

Thank you for all your help . Are figure 8 brackish or fresh? I used to have them but they kept dying on me.

They're brackish. In the magazine that came out yesterday I did a profile on them, so you should check that out.

Most of those will get way too big for a 20g, but a few could work.

I have 2 GSPs, they're lots of fun, but definitely more work than F8s.

Well as soon as I get my own place I am going to buy a 550 gallon for the living room. My mom bought property in NC and said if I give her $6,000 for a down payment then its all mine. Just have to get a house built. maybe a 550 on 1 side and 250 on the other? Gotta get some steel beams in the basement to hold the floor lol. image how many puffers I could put in a 550. *drool*
