Question and Update. Duckweed Arrived, Mollies SO happy
Hi everyone!
Real quick question: is my tank currently stocked or overstocked? (#2 in aquarium info.) I would like to get a little group of bumblebee gobies. But I definitely won't if it will stress my tank.
Now for the tank update:
Much thanks to toddnbecka -- my duckweed arrived today and I was almost as excited as my mollies when I dumped it in the tank. I have a brown thumb for sure, so hopefully this will last for my mollies....
Melvin is thriving! He's eating well and his color has really brightened. He's out and about at all time of the day and night & (after I semi-buried the store bought one) he's using both of his caves. It looks like he's already grown almost a inch!
Most of my mollies turned out to be boys, so they went back to the store; I have a couple more boys that need to go back, but they're not that easy to catch. My final Molly count will be 2 boys, 4 girls. There are also 3 platys & 11 gups. Everyone gets along well, except for Boris who keeps trying to mate with Patty who wants none of it. (Boris the guppy in love with Patty the platy)
(Here's the tank. I just fed everyone, that's why they're all going nuts on that lit side.)

In the video, it's those tiny things being shoved back under the surface and sucked into my intake filter. Lol.
Actually, it looks kinda like a super tiny pond lily. Most aquarists see it as a pest because one little handful of it can cover an entire pond in a month and it blocks the light for (and thus killing) other plants below the suface.
But if you're like me and you have the piggiest mollies known to mankind, you love the stuff because they can chow down to their hearts' desire and there's no need to worry about growing or replacing expensive plants.
I'm trying to make a kind of floating ring, so that it will stay in the ring on the surface and not get pushed under by the flow of my filter. It will be ready tonight, so we'll see how that goes....
Ok...so the floating ring kinda worked. But one side of the tube bent under the water about a 1/4 inch and most of the duckweed escaped through there. I'm going to keep trying. Although, my mollies do appreciate the convenience of plucking the duckweed right off the filter.
I had duckweed in my 29 gallon tank before it didn't repopulate very well, my angels and silver dollars ate a lot of them. So then I grabbed a few duck weeds and put them in my huge pond outside that is connected to the Amazon, and then all of the fishes pretty much had a good munch on them. So I didn't bother buying anymore even though they were $1.00 each, and they were in a small container
I love duckweed but it is illegal to buy or sell it in Arizona. I think the authorities are afraid that it will get into the irrigation system and clog it. I have a little bit of it that I managed to salvage from the main pond. A local fish store had it in some of his empty koi ponds and gave me a sandwich bag stuffed clear full (no water, just the plants). Any of it that gets down in my main pond is fish food, but I have one spot in one of the waterfalls that has rocks to hold it in. The duckweed in the pics is my current 'starter' plants. I just cleaned the pond not too long ago, and sent most of it down to be eaten as a treat.
