Poisoned Puffer Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I have this little figure eight puffer. He's in a 10 gallon all by himself until I can upgrade his tank. The tank has a whisper filter rated for forty gallons. I added some algae be gone from jungle to remove the thick hair algae in the tank. He then started spinning and spinning, stopped breathing a couple times, started back up and now he swims upside down and spins a lot. He's been like this for 2 days. He still eats the little pond snails if I put them up to his mouth and his gills are really inflamed. The people at the petstore said that this stuff was safe for brackish water and that it was safe for puffers. I beg to differ. nitrate in old tank was 2 PPM, nitrite 0, ammonia 0, S.G. was 1.010. His new temporary tank is the same for everything except the algae be gone. Will he get better?

oh I'm soooo sorry!!!!
I haven't heard of this before but it def sounds like it was the algae be gone. I would keep doing what your doing. Keep super clean water and keep feeding him. The fact that he's eating is a good sign.

his gills were beating at roughly 500 beats per minute, but they slowed down to normal now.

I'm sorry about your puffer, I hope he feels better soon.
Are there warnings on the label?

it says it can cause cancer in humans and not to use it with inverts or plants. Poor puffy just died. He didn't make it.

I'm so sorry you lost him. We all try very hard to take the best of care of our fish and we all make mistakes. Don't beat yourself up about it. It sounds like he had a wonderful home with you.

So sorry to hear about your puffer loss FishFreak. I personally avoid anything that says it may be cancerous to humans and this includes some of the ICK medications as well. Think about it. If it's harmful to us how can it be good for the fish? Check you labels folks! JMO but better safe than sorry! (I don't mean for this to sound like a lecture to you FishFreak by any means) Many of us have made the same mistakes.
Best wishes!
Ken

I'm so sorry...
You'd have to check with Pink, but I'm pretty sure I've read that since puffers don't have scales, they are sensitive to anything that would be harmful to inverts. I think thats mainly copper based products...

Yes, that's true. If it says it's harmful to inverts and/or plants, you can bet that it has copper in it, which is horrible for puffers. I'm so sorry you had to learn this the hard way
