| | Fish Keeper | Stocking 55g Brackish Okay, I just can't seem to let go of my desire for a violet goby. Do you ever see a fish that you just know you love? So, I decided to make my new 55g tank a brackish tank!
*My current stocking plans are 1 violet goby & maybe 6 chromides.
I've looked at lots of fish, but I can't find many that are friendly enough to go with my VG. Any suggestions? Last edited by iloveengl; September 3rd, 2009 at 01:15 AM.

| | Fish Mentor | I have no experience in brackish tanks, but I'll be watching this thread closely to learn about them.
And yes, we've all found fish that we really really love and it's wonderful that you're doing your research first and stocking around your favorite! |

| | Fish Keeper | Update:
My tank came at 5pm, but I immediately had to run to class, so I didn't get to play with it until 10:30. Four hours later (after I cleaned old fish poop & food off the decor , scraped off hard water build-up from the tank sides, vinegared, 1:20 bleach & water, rinse, rinse, rinse, dechlorinate, rinse), I was finally satisfied with everything. It's in the perfect spot in the bedroom, as if the room was built around the tank.
*I found a nice link for identifying what types of fish that will do well with the SG and temperment requirements of the dragon goby: http://badmanstropicalfish.com/brackish/brackish.html
Tomorrow: substrate Last edited by iloveengl; September 2nd, 2009 at 07:23 AM.
Reason: Just found a few things, but not worthy of a whole new post |

| | Fish Keeper | Lol if I put a tank in my restroom it will look like the room is built around the tank. Very gross. Congrats on the tank. I have no idea what brackish is so... |

| | Fish Keeper | *My updated stocking plans:
1 dragon goby (freshwater at Petsmart, need to acclimate)
1 knight goby
6 guppies (acclimate the 3 males I have & acclimate 3 new males)
2 orange chromides
SG and temp range seems to work well & I think everyone will share the length & height of the tank well, too.
I'll purchase most of these from thatpetplace.com; Everyone here who's bought from them seems to have positive reviews. SO excited! Last edited by iloveengl; September 3rd, 2009 at 01:24 AM.

| | Fish Keeper | I dont own any brackish tanks so I cant help but good luck with your decision. Time keeper, a brackish tank is a step between fresh water and salt water. |

SO excited! | You can try putting in Monos, and Scats too Or the Archer fishes ^_^ they are wonderful fishes! Especially since they have a great ability of doing "mathamatics" in their heads so they can shoot water out from their mouths up to 2 meters high or 2 m long |

Still, that visual makes it awfully tempting.
I'll definitely look into the mono and the scat. Thanks!
*Edit: Monos & Scats require 75 gallon minimum and they seem to be a bit too aggressive for my tank. Fun to learn about new fish though. Last edited by iloveengl; September 3rd, 2009 at 10:25 PM.

| | Fish Keeper | I rinsed my substrate (play sand of a brown/black mixture that's pretty and natural looking), added water, then the sand, then realized that I did it wrong lol. Now I have muddy water, but I turned the filter on & after five hours, it's already looking clearer, so maybe it'll be clear in a day. I only added 4 cups of marine salt (equates to 8 gallon 1.020 saltwater) so I will be able to slowly acclimate the freshwater guppies & dragon goby.
I ordered some AWESOME cured drift wood online and I hope to place that this week. I can't wait until I have something worthy of a picture lol. |

| | Fish Master | I LOVE dragon gobies too. I just don't have the time and $$ for a brackish tank right now. |

| | Fish Master | Kudos to you for doing your research! Brackish tanks are so much fun, you'll love yours. And knight gobies are stunning fish, I am jealous. Have fun with your tank! |

| | Fish Keeper | Thanks Amanda and Pink. It's taking a while, but it's getting there I'm really excited. I think I'm going to end up with just as colorful and fun a tank as I would have with a FW, plus my fishies will be really unique. I can't wait to bring Melvin home (the dragon goby I've had on hold at Petsmart for weeks )! |

Well I'm hoping to buy more tanks later on, and probably get a 125 gallon tank and get a scat and a few archer fishes Although I was thinking about what you said about "having the right set up" for archer fishes. What do you mean by that?? I hear that the love brackish water and then they can be introduced into pure saltwater when they have grown a lot bigger. About 5-7" they are able to get used to the saltwater.
And then buy like a 200 gallon long tank that is still fairly tall so it wouldn't take up too much space in length at my house and then make is pure salt water I've already got a few freshwater tanks, a large pond that I've been working on and the big amazon river |

I meant that the dragon goby is known for escaping because it's fins allow it to climb walls kinda like a pleco can stick to walls. So, in order to let the archer fish spit water, but still have a tightly covered tank for the goby, I'd have to keep the water much lower than I want for my set-up. Lol. I don't know if that made any sense outside of my head. |

| | Fish Keeper | Wow! A brackish tank huh? Looks like you have everything in order and well planned! I've tried setting up my own brackish tank before but was unsuccessful. Thanks to you, I might try again soon! Can't wait to see pictures of your tank! Keep us updated |

| | Fish Keeper | Hazaa! My 55g is completely CYCLED! I used TetraSfeStart + cycled filter + established tank water and tested it every day for a week: ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates 6. My brackish plants come tomorrow (hopefully) and I'll pick up my violet goby before the end of this week. I'm so e-x-c-i-t-e-d! I'll post pictures as soon as he is comfortable in his new home. | | Fish Keeper | Well, this was so unexpected that I decided to give it its own post: I just came back from the store with 16 mollies and 2 platys. I only meant to go for one danio, which I did get, but then I saw that the store had just ordered a new shipment of mollies. It stared at them for a few minutes, just because they were pretty and then I counted them... and then I brought every last one home with me Well, I couldn't buy some and then leave the others all alone, could I? The 2 platys came home just because they were pretty. I knew when I got them that it meant I wouldn't be getting my initial stocking list, but I am so much happier with these little lovelies.
It was kind of an ordeal trying to acclimate them. First I put them in a bucket with about a 1/2 gallon water from the freshwater tank. Then I soaked them there in their bag to get the temperature adjusted. Then I scooped them out with a net and put them in the bucket. Then every twenty minutes I added a cup or two worth of the brackish tank water (I did this for two hours). Then I had to put them in a Ziploc bag along with the water and float them in the tank to get used to the slightly warmer 55g brackish tank. And that's where they're currently hanging out for another twenty minutes or so.
I think they will really enjoy having such a huge tank basically all to themselves. This will leave my tank comfortably stocked with some very happy fishies. I don't think I could be more satisfied right now. Last edited by iloveengl; September 10th, 2009 at 05:13 AM.
