Brown Algae in Brackish Tank

It grows fairly quickly. I do about 20% water changes per week and the light is on 8 hrs per day but it's in a room that gets some sunlight (not directly on the tank though...)

Hmmm ... my 22 gal Brackish only has 2 X 15 watt incandescents on for about 10 hrs a day, but the tank is in a very dark hallway and never sees daylight. Maybe cut back on wattage?

My 22gal is surprisingly bright with only 30 watts worth of incandescent light ... I have not seen algae in that tank since I started it.

Sorry my feedback doesn't seem like much help ... but it would seem that wattage might be the culprit mixed with a little bit of light from the window during the day. My 55gal is not in the direct sunlight (window in the same room), but grows algae very regularly even with low lighting on 8 hrs per day.

sounds like diatoms to me. if that is the case, then i wouldn't worry about it. diatoms occur very frequently in new tanks, and usually go away on their own after about 6 months or so once your tank has gotten more established. you can scrub them off, but from my experience they'll just come back even worse than before. they're annoying, but completely harmless

If you're looking for a critter to take care of that, look into nerite snails, they can go in any salinity and are tough little buggers.
