| Acclimating Goby in Freshwater store to Brackish tank Hi.
My LFS has a goby in a high pH freshwater tank. I would like to buy him and put him in my brackish tank (1.008). Can I acclimate him from fresh to brackish like this?...
1) Keep him in the lfs bag.
2) Over the course of an hour, add one cup of water from the brackish tank to his bag every 10 minutes...
good? |

| i'd probably give it more than an hour, and check the salinity levels in the bag so that you know how quickly you're raising it an so you know when it hits 1.008. also, you'll want to dump a little bit of the water from the LFS out each time you add new water. believe me, you don't want any of that water to be put in your tank. |

| Justice, what kind of Goby? What pet store?
I ask because I know that at Petsmart they insist on keeping South American Dragon Gobies in their freshwater, gravel-filled tanks. These Gobies need brackish water and a sandy substrate so that they can filter their food with the sand. Needless to say, they constantly die, and the store just gets more. It's infuriating.
I emailed Petsmart about it, and of course haven't received a reply. Anyone else who wouldn't mind expressing disgust (in a polite way, of course:P more effective) about this cruelty, are more than welcome to! |

| Good idea. Turns out Petland (in NY) said they keep them in slightly brackish high ph water so I acclimated the (knight) goby to my higher salinity slowly and he's the superstar of my tank now. I"m slowly adding pool filter sand to my tank weekly as I take out a handful of my crushed coral substrate. I'll leave little bits of the crushed coral in there to keep ph up although all my tanks have at least 7.8 ph for no reason, no matter what I do. Are you housing mr. or mrs. goby? |

| I don't have any Gobies yet, but I have a freshwater 20g that I need to stock, and I loved the Bumble Bees but heard they like Brackish water and I don't have that. :/ They're such cool fish, though. |

| Brackish water is very easy. All the cycling is the same as you just add marine salt to your water getting your SG to 1.003-1.010...I must say I was thinking of going back to freshwater but decided not to to keep the goby. |

| Yeah, but then my FW fish that I already have wouldn't be happy, and I gotta think of them first. Worry not, there will be other tanks in my future, most likely, and at least one can be brackish! :P |

| I don't find them to be aggressive, they like to keep to themselves though, you'll find them sticking to your aquarium walls lying still for hours and floating after food Very adorable little fish |

| ^There are some that I saw at Walmart's (ugh, they really should not be allowed to keep fish, and we all know this, I'm sure), and I would love to rescue some if they wouldn't bother my other guys, whom are all peaceful, community fish, and if they won't be bothered by my freshwater, planted set-up. |

| I stick to my motto "Community fish only" the exception is my betta I would never place a true predatory fish in my community tank... If you can skip the walmart try to find them at your LFS and I wouldn't worry about them bothering your other fish
Good luck! |

| I haven't seen them at any of my LFS's, and as much as I hate giving walmart's any of my money, I feel so sorry for any fish that has to stay with them. We shall see, I still have to plan my stocking. *excited* |

Here's a pic of my 20g brackish. The lil guy or girl is a Rhinohorn Goby. So tiny, so cute! Last edited by MizRamzi; May 5th, 2009 at 11:10 PM.
