Question, how to mate gourami?

I got two golden gourami last year. Now both two are about 3 inch long. Recently I tried to mate them. I put them in a 10 gal tank with a big plant. However the male always attacked the female and they never mate. Now I doubt that I got two males. The guy in the petsmart told me that male has a longer dorsal fin and female has a short and round dorsal fin. Is that right and why my gourami never mate?

Thanks a lot

usually the gourami males are brighter in color than fems...im not sure on the fins...if they are the same in color, id say you have two of the same sex ...goodluck and hope someone has more info

To mate gourami you must introduce the female/s to the tank 3 days before the male and then you add the male and after that you feed them a variety of foods and hope for the best

Do you have some pictures which show the color difference between male and female? I tried to google it, but no luck.....

they need to be conditioned for a week or two with a high protein diet and prestine water..then make sure there are plenty of hiding spots for the fem and usually the gourami male will build a bubble nest..ive not bred them before but its not as easy as just add them and wish for babies

Go to www.fishdeals.com and search anabantids. The males dorsal fin comes to a point whereas the females is rounded.
Theres a different protocol for each species so read this site.

Thank you guys! My gourami already gave the birth. Now some eggs are already hatched. some of them are not yet. The male is still guarding the nests and female has hidedn in the concern for a while. However, I couldnot take her out just becausre I am afraid that I might ruin the nests. Tonight later I will take some pics and post it on. My question is when I should take both male and female out and how i can take them out without ruin the nest. And what's other advices?
