Nothing with to disrespect you nor anyone in the thread but for the extra eggs that didn't hatch, are those edible to eat? |

| The quail eggs are edible, however after being sat on for 3-4 weeks, I'm not sure how fresh they would be. As for the quail themselves, they are pets. They are too small for there to be enough meat on them. Each quail would only provide about a teaspoon of meat. Quail eggs are the "in" thing in fancy restaurants now... |

| No offense pls. Oh, I didn't think about that. Smart thinking .
Why's it more fancier than any other eggs? Woudn't all eggs taste almost the same? I would just eat a chicken egg b/c they are mass produced. |

| They are cute and small, eiginh. Also, you might be horrified if you saw how the chickens who are mass producing those chicken eggs are treated. I haven't bought a "regular" egg in years. I only buy free-range and am now converting to buy them from a friend who has a mini farm. |

| I forgot about KFC doing that to their chickens that was so horrible! Free range chickens and eggs are good but aren't they super expensive? |

| I don't even know about KFC chickens. Yes, they do cost a lot more, but I just can't purchase the others knowing what's going on with those chickens. I'd rather eat no eggs. |

| Yes they do taste pretty much the same as chicken eggs. I like to watch the Food Network - Iron Chef America. When they use the quail eggs, it is usually cooked "sunny side up" with a runny yolk (yuck!) and very gently placed on top of whatever dish. They are going for the whole egg look on a mini scale which (I guess) makes it fancy so they can charge more in restaurants. When I was younger, one of our neighbors raised fancy pigeons. She would use the pigeon eggs and never had to buy chicken eggs. They tasted pretty much the same also. |

| Sharkitty, the KFC is on youtube "KFC abusing chicken" it is so horrible.
Mmmm Iron Chef... I love watching that show along with Anthony Bordain's No Reservation on the travel channel, my mouth always waters watching them.
Anyway (hijacking your thread) how are the baby quails? Any personality to each one yet? Last edited by eiginh; July 7th, 2009 at 02:54 PM.

| I was walking by the cage tonight after crochet class and saw more new babies! I need to get into the cage to get some more pics of the teenage babies, and now I'll have to get pics of the new ones. There are 3 (maybe 4) new ones that just hatched today so I may even have more by tomorrow. I'm going to have a cage full! I may have to put daddy bird in isolation for a while! nah, only if he starts picking on his sons... |

| Well, it has been a day or two since I posted pics of the baby quail. Now there are a couple of new babies. I saw three on tuesday evening, but I couldn't get pics of all of them (they hide too well). Anyway, here are a couple pics of the new babies that didn't hide from the camera (one in my hand). This nest was under the water so I had to hold the water up while my sister took the pics. Then there are a couple pics of the daddy and 5 of the first batch of babies. Boy have they grown! They still have fuzzy heads so you can tell them apart from the adults. Then, the last pic is of a baby dove that was camping out in the sprinkler right outside the birdcage this afternoon. It was just sitting there enjoying the "cool rain". |

I was hoping they would scare off the stray cats. As you can see, they don't work. They do scare the little kids that come visit though...keeps them from climbing in the garden. |

| Tried them and they don't work either. I even got a statue of another cat...it worked for 2 days. So I painted it so it would look different and it worked for another 2 days. So I painted it again - it didn't work anymore. |

| Well, it has been a while since I put pics up of the "baby" quail. They are now getting big enough that it is getting hard to tell them from the adults! I even have a couple of the youngsters that are starting to get adult male coloring. I will have to find homes for them before the boys start fighting. Anyway, here are a couple of pics from today. |

| And then some of the closer up pics so you can see the color coming in on the boys. They are the ones with the black and white stripes on their throats and the pretty russet color on their bellies... |

The one on the left is not showing any colors yet, so I'm not sure if it is a boy or a girl.
The second pic (top right) is a teenager boy and the daddy is sticking his head in the pic from the lower left side.
The third pic is a pic of the other teenager male showing his dark red feathering on his chest and the black and white stripes coming in on his throat. |

| Many many years ago. I noticed there were lots of bugs and ants in the bottom of my aviary and though the quail might help to keep the bugs down. They do a very good job. At first, I would just get all females and not breed them. Then, one time, one of the ones I got turned out to be a male. They had babies. The first I knew of the babies was when I saw one running across the driveway. When they first hatch, they are small enough to go right through the aviary wire. That's why I have a second strip of smaller wire all around the bottom of the cage. It's to keep the new hatched babies in the cage. Anyway, since then, I try to get one male and one or two female. Sometimes they have babies and sometimes they don't. It has been awhile since I've had babies. The last time I had some hatch they kept disappearing. I found out that there were a couple of toads in the cage. They had got in when they were tiny (or else they dug in) and were now big enough that they were eating the baby quail. I caught them and turned them loose in our garden (away from the quail). |
