new use for 2.5 gallon tank

My sister has peach faced lovebirds that have decided to raise a baby. She doesn't really want another one in her aviary, so she decided to let me hand raise the new baby. Well, he came to my home today and is now residing in one of my 2.5 gallon tanks. It makes a nice cozy little home for him. We let mama raise him until he had plenty of fuzz and was starting to get his pinfeathers. Here are some pics of him that she took out in her aviary. Innit he coot?

He is much larger now - I'll try to get a couple more pics. The first pic was taken 12 31 08. The pics are all about 3-5 days apart and the last pic was taken yesterday (1 23 09).

Not quite. I wish I knew how to label the individual pictures.
The first pic is 12/31/08. He is only a couple of days old.
The second pic is 1/3/09 - four days later - age about 6 days
The third pic is 1/9/09 - six days growth - age about 12 days
The fourth pic is 1/16/09 - a week later - age about 19 days
The fifth pic is 1/23/09 - another week later - age about 26 days - almost a month old.
He is starting to explore his surroundings and nibble on things. Pretty soon he will be trying to eat on his own. Baby birds grow so fast.

Well, after breakfast this morning, fuzz bucket (temporary name) decided to take a nap, so all the picture I could get was of him in his ball of burlap sleeping. I'll have to see if I can get someone else to take a picture of him while he is eating. After his lunch, (when he decided he was done, not me) he tried to burrow into my hand. Then when I was setting him down in his nest, he dove off my hand and into his ball of burlap and buried himself in it. I think he likes his bed...

Yes. This is NOT January weather - this is April weather. The garden doesn't know what to do and my finches are starting to breed. Not to mention the moss in pond is growing like mad. Oh well, that just gives me lots to bring in for the clean up crew.

Well, after breakfast this morning, he decided he wanted to explore a bit, so I took a couple of pics of him. He is really getting his wing feathers in, but his rump is still nothing but fuzz!

Well, his name is now Twitters. He had an outing to the garden today when I went out to pick spinach leaves for my Mom's salad. I think he enjoyed it...
I love his little blue rump - the feathers are still real short, but it is so cute.

What a cute name! It looks like Twitter really liked being outside.
Don't they get lonely without a mate?

If he was just in a cage all by himself, yes. Instead he is bonding with humans (mainly me). This way he will be a very loving family pet. My zebra finches, on the other hand, would not survive alone. They would need to be kept with at least two birds together.

Oh I see. How cute. I had just heard that they get lonely. I imagine you'd have to always be around?

I am on disability and I am always home. I help my Mom around the house (she is 79). Since I am home all day, it works perfect for me to raise him. Once he is an adult, no you don't have to be home all day. He would be perfectly happy to have attention morning and evening each day. Right now, he naps for a couple of hours in the morning and again in the afternoon. Of course, he is still a growing baby and all babies do is eat, sleep, and poop. He's got it down perfect!

I've always admired them. They have such sweet faces. I'd love to have a couple. What's their life span?

Some pics from Tuesday night. My sister came over and brought her camera... I was feeding him and showing him off to the crochet class. This was feeding time - boy is he messy!

And of course - after dinner he had to explore a bit. I put him in his little nest bowl and he didn't want to stay. He climbed out and was looking around. I put my hand down and he came running to my hand and climbed up in it to cuddle. It was pretty cute.

He is absolutely adorable! It is amazing how quickly they grow, too.
What a sloppy eater! Too funny.
How do you clean him when he is done eating?

Twitters got his first bath today. He was so messy after lunch today I just couldn't wipe it all off. I got a large shallow bowl and put a paper towel in the bottom so he wouldn't slide around. Put about 1/4 inch of warm water in the bottom and let him walk around in it for a while. He was very anxious to climb out and be cuddled after his bath. Sorry no pictures, I couldn't do the camera and handle him at the same time. He cuddled for a good hour before he was ready to climb around again. Then he used my fingers like a jungle gym - hanging upside down and climbing all over. He is in for a nap now. I think I wore him out... I'll try to get some more pictures of him walking around and playing. He is so much fun to watch.
