| Twitters is sooo sweet. He is constantly wanting to cuddle under my chin or under my ear (he tries to chew on my ear but that is NOT allowed!) or he will cuddle down in my hand for me to scratch his head and neck. And yes, it is amazing how fast birds grow. I can't believe I've only had him for three weeks (plus 2 days). He is such a little lover bird. Maybe that's why they call them lovebirds? |

| Two more pics of Twitters's adventures in the great outdoors...It was such a nice afternoon today, we went out to sit by the pond. I let him climb around the pond a bit and took a pic of him running back across the pond to me. After we had been outside for a while, he started to fall asleep in my hand - tried to get a pic of him yawning, but I never have the camera ready when he yawns...oh well.
He is pretty much eating on his own now. He still begs once in a while, but more for comfort than for the actual food. Now we are just waiting for him to finish growing his wings so he can learn to fly. He still goes pretty much straight down when he tries to fly. |

| Well, Twitters is eating on his own and almost ready to go to his new home. All we are waiting on is him learning to fly. Once he learns to fly (so he will know how to break a fall) I will clip his wings and he will be ready to go to his new home. Anyway, here are some pics of Twitters outside exploring this morning. He had fun and is now napping in his cage. |

| Yeah. I'll miss him too, but at least I'll be able to visit once in a while. And my sister's lovebirds are at it again. Twitters will have two younger siblings soon (if both eggs hatch). My sister may decide to have me hand raise both of them also. |

| It has been a while since the last update. Basically, we are just waiting for Twitters to grow in his adult wing and tail feathers so he can learn to fly. Then he will be able to go to his new home. He is soooo spoiled rotten! He has to have his outside time every day and his cuddle time when he gets tired. If he is out of the cage and I am ignoring him (or doing something else), he will climb up on my shoulder and bite at my ear or chin or neck or whatever until I pay attention to him. I had him outside with my Mom and I while we were working in the garden this morning. He climbed all over in the garden (it is caged in with chicken wire to keep the cats out). He played with the weeds we were pulling and "helped" by picking at the dirt where we pulled out the weeds. He chewed up the grass clippings we use for mulch, and even help to tamp down the dirt over the seeds I planted (by walking all over them). Of course, by the time we were done and coming in the house, he was very tired. He climbed up my leg and tried to burrow into my arm. I held him in my hand and scritched his head and neck while he took a nap in my hand. I didn't get any pics of him in the garden today, I'll have to get some pics next time I take him out to work in the garden with me. I do have a couple of pics from earlier in the week when I had him outside. He was walking all over the front porch and kept trying to climb up the pots. He is quite the little clown! |

| I can't get over how sweet he is. Such personality. Do all love birds act this way if you hand raise them the way yout doing? |

| As far as I know they should. This is the first lovebird I've done from such a young age. I tamed an older one for my sister - it took all of about one week. That one wasn't quite as tame as Twitters is, but then he started out older (probably between 1 and 2 years of age). He was already flighted and had been in an outdoor aviary his whole life. I raised a pigeon that a friend of mine found blown out of the nest that stayed quite tame. I turned it loose at a local park - he was so friendly that he spent more time following people around than the other pigeons (at least until he found a girlfriend!) I rescued a sparrow and raised her. I put a band on her leg so I could tell which one was her when I turned her loose and she stayed around the house for several months after I turned her loose. I could go outside and hold a mealworm in my hand and she would fly down out of the tree to land on my hand and eat the mealworm. She found a mate also and they "flew off into the sunset" together. Actually, I think she might have flown more east and south than west. The finches and canaries I hand raised all stayed fairly tame as long as I spent time with them every day. The cockatiels that I hand raised stayed extremely tame their whole lives. The one that my Dad gave my sister stayed more bonded to me (as the main Momma) than to my sister even though we both fed them (there were 3 in that clutch). It was just that I spent more cuddle time with them than my sister did, so they bonded more with me. They bond with whomever feeds them, but the cuddle time really strengthens the bond. The more time you spend with them, the tamer they become and the tamer they will stay. If I were to put Twitters in an aviary and just leave him there, he may stay fairly tame, but probably not to the point where he would follow me around like he does now. Twitters' new mommy comes over at least once a week and spends time holding and playing with Twitters and cuddling with him, so he is almost as comfortable with her as he is with me. The transition to his new home should be just fine and he will probably stay as tame as he is now. Especially if she spends cuddle time with him every day. |

| Another update on Twitters. His new mama is ordering his cage so she will have everything ready. He is trying to fly and can actually get about 2-3 inches off the floor. He still prefers to run after me instead of flying, but he will try to fly if I get too far ahead of him. I got a couple pics of him after his bath yesterday. He really gets himself wet. It is fun to watch him, but I've only caught him at it once and I didn't have a camera at the time. After his bath, I let him out to play for a while, and then he wanted his cuddle time and fell asleep in my hand again. Anyway, here are some new pics of Twitters. |

| Final update on Twitters. He has finally gone to his new home. He went home Sunday afternoon and settled in fairly well. His new cage is 3 times the size of his baby cage and he has a lot of room to stretch out and play. Here are a couple of pics: enjoying some brussell sprout with me, munching on a treat on top of his new cage his first day home, and cuddling with his new Mommy on his first day home. |

So, in about a month, I will have another young lovebird to hand raise. It looks like the new baby is going to be green also. It has the dark eyes and skin of the green babies. I'll start a new thread for the new baby when I get it. |

| Update on Twitters - he came to visit last night! Still does not fly - still has no tail feathers. Oh well. I figured out why. Twitters was a winter baby. He hatched the end of december. The cold weather stunted and slowed his growth. Winter babies seldom survive, and if we had not brought him in to hand raise, he would not have survived. Even though he is full grown, he is smaller than other lovebirds. He still does not fly, although he does stretch and flap his wings. He has not grown full wing feathers or tail feathers either. He is very happy with his new family. He is hardly ever in his cage - the family members take him out to play at every opportunity. He even eats dinner at the table with them! Because he does not fly, he gets to go outside almost every day to play in the yard. The kids chase him around the yard like they are playing tag - he sure can run!
He may never learn to fly, but he is loved and happy in his new home. |
