Update on Twitters. He is really growing fast. I can't believe it has only been 8 days since my sister brought him over with only pinfeathers! The pic of his back sitting on the pecan branches looks like an adult, but it is really Twitters! He still does not fly, although he sure get his wings flapping. And he still loves to burrow in his burlap ball/nest. He is starting to pick at a little bit of seed although his beak still is not strong enough to crack it. He does like his Fruity Rice Crispies though! And he chewed up his first weed...and he doesn't like tangelos. They may be too strong of a flavor for him. I'll try a bit of watered down orange juice in a day or two.

Sorry, I don't ship birds. You would have to come pick him up. Actually, he may already be sold. A friend of mine told me today that she may want him when he is ready to find a new home. Of course, there may be more baby lovebirds in the future... Twitters Mom and Dad are still around and may have more babies. If they turn out to be green, they will be hand fed/raised just like Twitters.

The four pics I put on today are ones I took this afternoon. I will put more pics up in a day or two. My sister has a better camera than just my cell phone camera and she will be here Tuesday night. I hope she remembers to bring her camera...

I was joking. As much as I would love to have one I don't think I could properly take care of one.
Plus I'd be fearful for it because of my cat.

I thought you were going to keep him. It must be hard for you to let go. At least if he goes to a friend, you can visit him.

If I were to raise one to keep, it would be a cockatiel. They are my favorites. It is hard though, because my Mom is allergic to a lot of the dust and dander. Puppy lives outside, although she has a covered patio with a good bed and the shop that is attached to the house and receives the benefit of cooling and heating from the house, so she does just fine. There are also two full grown pecan trees out back that shade all summer long. My finches are in an aviary out front, so they don't affect Mom so much. Just no birds in the house. As long as Twitters is being hand fed and such, he lives in the glass tank which contains his dander quite well. I change his bed 2-3 times a day just to get the pile of feather casings out. I'll miss him when he is gone, but at least I know he will be going to a good home and will have a loving owner. That is the important thing. Of course, that won't happen until he is full grown and eating on his own, so I have some time with him still.

Twitters got a bath today. There was food on the feathers on either side of his beak that needed to be washed off. After his bath, we went outside to sit in the sun. He actually tried nibbling on the branches today. And he is now sitting up on the branches better. My sister is bringing her camera over tonight, so I may have a couple more pics tomorrow or the next day (whenever she sends them to me). In the meantime, here are the two pics from this afternoon's sunning session...

Twitters graduated to a real cage today. He is getting so big, and wanting to explore now. I put him in a small travel cage I use for my finches and had him with me while I was working outside after his breakfast. He was climbing all over the perches and chewing on the branches and the grass sticking up through the bottom of the cage. He was having a blast! When I came in, I just couldn't take him out of the larger cage and put him in his little 2.5 gallon tank. He was still climbing around the perches and stretching his wings and chewing on the perches. He didn't even want his lunch at lunch time. It wasn't until 3 pm that he finally wanted his lunch, then he was so tired, he crawled up into my hand and fell asleep while I was petting him. It was so adorable, I just had to get a picture. He is actually laying/leaning on my hand with one foot all balled up under his belly. His head and neck are actually being supported by my hand - I could feel the weight of them when he laid his head over the edge of my hand. Anyway, the first pic is when he is just a couple days old and was taken on 12-31-08, then the pic I took today of him sleeping in my hand. He is just over 1 month old and look how much he has grown!

I've loved watching Twitters. He's grown up so much so fast! When he's exploring outside, aren't you worried he might fly away?

Nah. He hasn't learned to fly yet. It has only been yesterday and today that he has even tried flapping his wings. His first several "flights" will be pretty much down until he strengthens his wings, and he hasn't even got that far yet. Trust me, I will be keeping an eye on him to make sure he doesn't get into anything he isn't supposed to. That is why I put him in the cage when I had him outside with me today. I couldn't watch him to make sure he didn't walk off somewhere and get lost. Besides, he still comes crying to me to be fed - and will for at least several more days. Even after they start flying, Momma and Poppa still feed them.

That's good! I've never had birds, so I don't know much. My husband wants to have a parrot one day. I've heard you have to have them in your wills because they live so long!

The larger parrots (macaws, african grays, cockatoos) can live 50+ years. The smaller hookbils (lovebirds, cockatiels, conures, parakeets) are closer to 20+ years.

I took a couple of pics of Twitters in his new digs this morning. He loves to climb around the cage and will climb in and out of his bed (the big white thing under the perches). He still likes to cuddle, and when he is done eating, he will climb into my hand for his cuddle session.

so sweet
I like birds but I don't know if they'd be the pet for me.
I would love a Macaw though.

Time for an update. Twitters has been in my care for a whole 2 weeks now. I can't believe how much he has grown in just 2 weeks. He had another outing this morning to play in the sun before we get our rainstorm (fingers crossed hoping). I let him explore around the fishpond today. They swam up to see if he was going to feed them, but he was a bit nervous. After all, they are bigger than he is. He still is not flying, but he does flap his wings. I don't have to worry about him flying off into trouble somewhere. Well, I better go feed him his dinner, he is starting to squawk rather insistently.....feed me - feed me - feed me - NOW!!!.

Well, Twitters is trying out his wings now, and has decided he wants to start taking a bath. I caught him right after his bath today and his front is all wet. It's is funny to watch him - he stick his face in the water and flaps his wings. I guess it is time to get him a bathtub for his cage! Also, when he is ready to eat, he will fly from the cage to my leg and climb up, squawking the whole time - saying "feed me - feed me - feed me".

How adorable! Thank you for sharing his story with us. I've never experienced bird keeping so it's so great to learn so much. What would have happened if he wasn't a green baby? Best wishes Twitter! What a splendid life he's enjoying.

If he had been yellow, my sister would have kept him. She just doesn't want anymore green ones. She likes the yellow and blue ones.

Time for another Twitters update! He is pretty much eating on his own now. He will only eat a couple of beak fulls of his formula in the morning and evening now. He munches on his seed and pellets and treats all day long. He still pretty much flies straight down, so it is still safe to take him outside. This morning it was so nice, we went outside to play. He thought about taking a bath in the waterfall, but the water was too cold, so he climbed over to me and huddled against my leg to get warm. He went with me into the garden and played around the plants (chewing on them too - he likes carrot tops and spinach leaves). We went in to my outdoor aviary and he climbed on some of the perches while I spaded up the bottom. He didn't quite know what to make of the finches out there. I put him down in the grass so he could try nibbling on some of it, but all he did was run across the lawn to me. It was too funny. I wish I had a video camera to take pics of him. He followed me around like a puppy in a feather suit. He can sure walk pretty fast on those short little legs! Anyway, here are some pics of him by the pond and one in the aviary.
