What can I do for him?

I was totally impulsive today when I was at Petco checking heater prices (the heater in one of my 10gal "fraternity" tanks shattered yesterday, so I had to replace it). I just happened to stroll by the betta section and bent down to check their HMs and deltas. There I found this GORGEOUS dark blue butterfly DT. I'm usually not one for the deltas, but this guy was just gorgeous. So, I bought him.

His cup was only about half full of water so he could barely swim upright (if you've been to Petco, you know how shallow their betta cups are anyway) and he seemed to be kinda drifting over to his side when he wasn't moving. He did come to the front of the cup to watch me when I picked him up, which was unusual since usually I have to "chase" them around the cup to get a good look at them (you know, the whole spin-the-cup game where they stay just ahead of you so you can't see them :P ).

Anyway, I had some other errands to run after I picked him up and he ended up being in the truck for over an hour. It's freezing cold and I don't usually run my heater much to conserve gas, but I did run it tonight because I had him in the truck. However, I had to do some grocery shopping, so he was in there for at least 45 minutes with no heat. I covered his cup with a jacket and nestled him down in a protected area of the console so that it would retain some of the heat in the cup, but apparently that wasn't enough. I got him home and put him in my temporarily divided 10gal (going to finish dividing it tomorrow since I got the report binder clip things tonight to do the DIY dividers). The tank is at 79F and fully cycled (0 ammonia, 0 nitrites and about 10 nitrates). There's a VT male in one section and a rather beat up CT male in the middle (he and his previous neighbor, my other CT male, ended up being able to get at each other through the plastic canvas and tore each other up pretty bad...the other CT male is in a different divided tank now). Since I got him home, he looks a little better and his color is back to the nice deep blue it was (it had faded to a washed-out blue), but he's still swimming a bit oddly. He is kind of head-down, but will slip over to his side every once in a while.

Should he be okay once he warms up more and gets used to the tank? I will have to move him tomorrow since I'm going to be finishing up the tank he's in, but he'll be going straight into another established, divided, heated, filtered 10gal. Thanks, guys. No pics of the new guy yet, but I'll get some of everyone tomorrow after I get the tanks divided and completely finished. I haven't decided on a name, but he'll either be Caius, Felix or Demitri, depending on what his personality turns out to be.

He looks like this, just darker blue and his ventral fins are completely white (as are his pectorals):

Sounds lovely! Congrats Paige.
Love all the names you've picked, as usual, any one will be great! We've all seen before how when a little betta comes home from the store, how much he can colour up and develop a cheeky personality when he gets used to good surroundings in a couple days. If he seems OK just now, keep a close eye on him, which I know you'll do anyway. It may be stress of moving about so much (I've noticed new fish swimming funny for a while after bringing them home, then they act like nothing's ever been wrong).
I hope he will be OK, but the swimming thing is what you'll have to watch (again, you know that). Keep us updated, I want good news on this guy!

I just checked him (I'm so worried about him and the new heater in the other tank) and he seems a lot better. At least he's swimming more normal now.

These aren't great pics of him, but they're the best I could get. He's rather shy! (I'm not used to having shy bettas...most of mine are attention hogs! lol).

These are my two male CTs that got at each other through the plastic canvas divider. They both look a little bedraggled. :P
Alec (he got the worst of it):

Aw poor little boy! They'll get better soon with your TLC.
The new boy is gorgeous, very strong colour. So glad to know he looks better, let's hope it was just stress after all

What a beautiful boy! Glad to hear he's in good hands now.

Your crowntails look almost exactly like my Kefentse I guess that must be a common coloration.

MM, I'm curious about something. I'm not planning on breeding any time soon (don't have the time, money or space), but if I was to breed the new boy in the future would I have to breed him to a delta tail female or could I pair him with an HM or VT female? I haven't read up on betta genetics (other than knowing that red is a dominant color), so I'm curious if I paired him with an HM female what type of tail I'd get.
One like this:

On a better note, he's doing MUCH better this morning. He's swimming upright and was a pain to catch so I could start "officially" dividing the tank he was in. :P He'll be going into my three-way divided 10gal (that is moderately planted) between Alec and Dragon, so hopefully he'll come out of his shell and I'll be able to get some awesome pics of him.

You can spawn him with anything. If you were looking for HM then the HM female would b the proper choice. A VT female would decrease you're tail spread and DT or SD would give you more DT's

I love the HMs, so I'd probably spawn him with an HM female then, if that'll give me HMs. It's hard to find quality HMs around here (especially since Petco is the only store that sells anything other than the "standard" VTs and CTs). Cool! Thanks, Red!

No worries.

Just remember to really do your homework before you decide to try a spawn. Betta Breeding isn't for the faint of heart of unprepared

Prescisely! That's why I'm not even going to attempt it right now. :P I have a friend who tried twice to breed his matched yellow plakats and while they successfully spawned, the fry didn't survive more than a week. He researched it a lot and was in contact with a guy on another forum who used to breed bettas very successfully, and he still didn't have success. I'm just trying to get an idea of what would work later on when I have the time/money/space. For right now, Demitri (decided on his name finally!) is just a beautiful pet.

Critter, I am lovin' that little female as well. If I could afford her, I'd probably bid on her. :P

Hehe...I had to keep up with the Twilight theme since I diviated from it with Dragon.

He is SUCH a shy little guy! Every time he sees me, he flits to the back of the tank and sits behind the heater.

I have a pretty little steel VT female that would compliment him, but I want HMs, not more VTs (I'm kind of "out-growing" the VT phase...I still think they're pretty, but I'm discovering the wide world of alternate finnage! lol). Hopefully when I'm ready to do this, I'll be able to find the perfect female to compliment him.
