What is wrong with this guy?!?

Normally when I see something I either don't understand or I think is just plain wrong, I either shake my head and go on about my business or I go around yelling at the ceiling for a while...this time I can't decide which category this falls under..it seems to me that is just plain wrong.. but once again I am no expert..is this normal?? I would think this is a kind of deformity..the poor little thing!!!!!!!!

Looks like some kind of genetic deformity to me. It's possible he could grow out of it, but to be honest it looks like something genetic.

He doesn't seem to be in too poor of health despite the weirdness. Poor little guy...if I saw him in a pet store I'd have to take him in.

I totally agree with that! I am a total pushover for the rescuees! I also agree that he doesn't seem to be in any distress but i still think that it is just wrong on so many levels! I was wondering how all his organs would fit where they needed to

That looks like a DT gene at work there It can shorten up the body like that if it's not managed right. I have to say though that this guy seems to just be part of a rash of low quality fish coming through aquabid right now. Seems like every male I look it as showing some sever rose tail and now this... <headshake>

I have to admit it just broke my heart to see! I am very glad he doesn't seem to be suffering but it is still hard for me to see!

Yes he looks a little strange, hope the poor guy is OK. I don't quite know what to make of it, like you!

There have been a lot of those "short bodies" listed recently....It is NOT a good thing but it is just another way for Thailand to make big bucks off of inexperienced people....

All the crumby fish listed recently have made my sales sky rocket!

Ooh, congrats, lovely boy MM! The cold weather here sucks too! I am waiting on delivery of a new CT male, but the weather hates me (saying that, I would rather wait until it is safe for him to travel though haha!)

wtg MM!! Now thats what I'm talking about! That awesome boy is worth every penny and then some! I am sad to see people selling deformed fish like they are side show attractions just to make a buck off the "freak". It sickens me! It steams me evenmore knowing that for the most part proper breeding and genetic management would have prevented the majority of these deformities from happening!!

I have to agree that there have been loads of lower-quality fish on aquabid lately, and for really inflated prices. This short-bodied guy is an example of something I would personally -never- breed and would sell at a discount because of an obvious structural deformity. He'd make a great pet, I'm sure, but 35$ is a bit much.

not to mention the high transhipping fees..that would bring him closer to $75. It is really sad..but maybe it is a good thing he isn't in a LFS..I don't think I could resist rescuing him!

critter, you took the words right out of my mouth regarding MM's boy. He is worth EVERY PENNY of that $76! I've been cruising AquaBid lately, mainly for grins and giggles (can't afford anything off there right now) and to get an idea of colors and such and some of the bettas on there I look at and think "I saw one just like that in Petco for $15."

I know I had a standing order for a true green crowntail for over 2 years and withdrew it about a year ago and then you slip a true green OHM in there MM YIKES I will hope that maybe sometime in my life to own a true green betta but expect to pay for it as they are rare as hen's teeth But to have a true green...WOW! that would be one to dream about.

Your betta is gorgeous and yes someone got a deal at $75 they would cost more some places.

And of the latest Thailand imports that I have gotten 2 of the 4 have not lived more than about 3 or 4 months. My bettas get good care and good food and I do not overlook health problems so the problems almost have to be genetic and are totally undistinguishable. I do not blame the breeders so much but find that I am not willing to deal with them anymore and pay the fees for the shipping and take the chances any longer when there are reputable and trustworthy breeders on this side of the ocean who do a lovely job and you don't have the costs to pay for all the extras.

Poor little boy, his body just sort of ends too soon doesnt it? I makes him look odd. He looks happy enough within himself but I can't imagine it could be very pleasant.
