Hi all! Here are some pics from start to finish on the hex set up. Now I just have to wait for the cycle to finish before I try to add the girls! The filter I have in it is the cycled filter from the 38 gallon. I have sponge filters in there with the fry right now.
The only thing in there at the moment is the molly I was given and 2 albino cories cause I couldn't keep them in the 1/2 gallon cups for long! I plan on getting a few more cories once the cycle is complete casue I know they like bigger groups..not quite sure what I am going to be doing with the molly..I might get some more of the mollies and their own tank..I don't really turst her in with my betta girls..
I am keeping very close watch on the water and will be doing regular wc's until things in there settle down..I promise! Once it is cycled, I will add the females and watch VERY carefully to see if everything is going to work out. I also have a stand-by seperated tank cycling in case there is too much aggression with the females..
Now all I need to do is find an awesome background!!
Thanks Red, I need it! I am keeping all my toes and fingers crossed that this will work! But I am prepared for it not to...since it seems to not work much more often than it DOES work! And if it doesn't...who knows..maybe I will have to get some more of those balloon mollies...the one I was given is surely lonely and she just cracks me up! Either way, it will be ok!
I just showed my little girl (almost 2) the last picture. She pointed at the decorations, plants, and even the heater, calling each one a "bish"... the only thing she didn't call a fish was... well, you know... the fish. lol
The tank looks great. Makes me want a hex some day.
Thanks..I will try some hornwort too..The tank is still in need of some more live plants towards the top but I was still a little stumped on which kinds would be best..thanks for the suggestion!!
Good luck. If it doesn't work or also you start a molly tank - they are great fish. They have wonderful personalities and will also eat out of your hand. I loved my mollies when I had them several years ago. Make sure you get all females unless you want babies - they breed like rabbits.
Water sprite and frogbit work great for me as floating plants. My betta Cowboy likes to hang out in the roots of the frogbit, and the water sprite in my other tank provides a ton of cover. Maybe your girls would like those plants too.
several of the girls are MM's that I believe were raised in the same tank. I have some sibling import females coming on thursday also. I thought that I might put them all in seperate square containers so I can place them right up next to each other..that way I might be able to judge their reaction to each other better. It will be about 2 weeks before I add them. I need to keep the thai imports seperate to make sure there is no illness among them and want to add all the females at the same time...hopefully that will increase my chances of this working!
As far as the mollies go, I was given that female 2 weeks ago..3 days ago I went to clean the tank she was in and do a wc and there were 5-6 little fry running around in there! They have a 3 gallon to themselves right now..I really enjoy watching her!
I am more than a bit nervous..MM's girls have never really had any aggression to each other in the divided tanks they were in, but the only Thai import I have so far, a mg ct female, is a MEAN little girl! This is the one that bit and held onto the toothpick I was feeding bloodworms with, flew into another females tank and IMMEDIATELY started attacking her. Obviously, she was never a candidate for this tank..no way I would put her in with any other females..she even beats the poo out of the males in the spawn tank..but I am worried that all the new import females will be just as mean...
That is a big part of what has me worried...there are 5 more females coming. I didn't buy but 2 of them..the other 3 are freebies..but bought or not, they are coming! That will put my female total at 11. After the Thai's have gone through quarantine, I am gonna give this a shot. I amhoping that the numbers alone will help keep aggression to a minimum..or at least well spread out and not targeting a certain one!
I certainly wish you well as most do!!!
my only concern (other than the obvious of things going wrong with allot of our tanks) is the tank is more a tall tank and not as much swimspace that especially girls will need.. I hate being the bad egg but the horizontal swimspace is whats going to be needed as then you have a chance of hiding their line of site much easier....as bettas go to the top for air, they are going to have issues with others being in their space ....my MM girls have more spitfire than my store boughts....I so wished mine would have worked as it would be a much easier task and a fun tank to be had!
This is kind of the first try tank...if it doesn't work out with this tank, I am finally going home in about 2 more weeks, and I have a 55 with africans in it now...the oscars are in the process of being rehomed with a friend who has a 150 gallon...they will be much happier there than in the 75 at home...I was planning to move the africans to the 75 which would leave the 55 empty..and if necessary I can try it for all the girls..I had been hoping to get a few more angelfish, but honestly my bettas come before all the others so if they ned the tank, they will get it! Honestly though, I got the hex cause I wanted a hex..not specifically for the betta girls so if they don't like the tank it's no biggie..the cories and the molly love it!

would be a perfect tank for angels.....getting ready to set mine up for that also...and the 55g would definitely be a possibility for sorority...I only had a 20g and 30g....but if my 55g was free, id have gone that route for sure..
I had been thinking about that exact thing...I know angels love the really tall tanks. There is a good possibility that since I will be going home in about 2 weeks and the Thai fish won't be here til Saturday and still need their quarantine time before I put them with the rest of my babies, that I won't add anyone to a sorority tank til I get home..which opens up the 55 for them..Like I said, I wanted the hex just cause, not specifically for the betta girls. Not to mention, I am not entirely sure the problems I have been having really are water related, I just can't think of anything else it could be..I am in a big hurry to get home to my GOOD water!! I appreciate your advice Shawnie! I think I might just wait to combine the females til the 55 is ready. It is already cycled I just have to move the africans to the 75 and add a few more plants..hmmmmm..I like it!!

I dont want to be the bad egg...especially when ALLOT of us were so excited to try it as you are....and having ALL my girls being MM's girls, I thought for sure it would be awesome!! and it was, for a few weeks....again if I could have used my 55g , who knows it might have worked....and I say if at ALL possible, attempt it with the 55g and not the hex.....I think your changes are much greater on sucess with the 55 ....I hope things look up soon for water or whatever it might be!
Thanks Shawnie! I think you are right..I think my chances of success will be better in the 55...goodness knows I get excited about something fish related just about everyday! It is good to have you guys to help keep me from going off half-cocked in my excitement!
Wanted to give everyone an update on the girls..I decided to go ahead and give this tank a try since it would be easier on me to cut down the number of tanks I have to treat for the infection. It has been 4 days now since I put them in the tank, and they are all getting along great! I only saw 1 nip so far..they even swim along together and rest in a big bunch up in the corner with the heater! I am still keeping a very colse watch on everyone but am very hopeful now that this will work out!
