Caves n' Holes

I want (and somewhat need) to get a cave for my bettas. I'd also like something they can swim through, like a hole (not including plants). How big does the hole have to be? Is there any "rule" i should follow to make SURE they do not get stuck?

No there is no rule... U can make the hole however big or small that u want as long as ur betta can make it thru with no problems.

Stick your 2 fingers thru it. If you can move in out easylily it should be fine

The recomendation i heard was that if you can fit your thumb through it your betta should be ok. If you're buying an ornament take a piece of pantyhose and run it over the surface of it. If the patty hose catches then it's possible your betta will catch their fins as well....

A good source of 'caves' for bettas is plastic hamster/gerbil toys.. our bettas LOVE the little couches and tvs. I leave a little air in the top of them when I put them in the tank and keep them weighed down with flat glass marbles. The plastic tubes are also pretty popular, either floating along the surface or lying on the substrate.

Wow, I'll really consider that!
It does sound interesting. And very very colorful haha

For a cave, an unglazed terracotta pot works well. The holes in the bottom of the pot are too small to swim through so you'd have to either plug it with something or cut it wider. Hamster tubes are great swim throughs, but I found them to be stupidly expensive so I make my own swim throughs with plastic crafting mesh and zip ties. I sand the part where the zip tie locks and bury it in the gravel with a small layer of gravel inside the tubes so there's no way for fins to get caught. I found it to be a more budget friendly alternative to the hamster tubes while still allowing me to choose among various colors and sizes.

For a fun make-your-own tunnel, buy hamster tubing and use aquarium silicone to cover it in smooth pebbles or sand or silk plants or a combination. Sanded and smoothed PVC Piping, so long as it hasn't been used to hold chemicals and hasn't been coated in anything, can also be used.
