| Should i get a new boy...?... Got One! (or 2) I've been trying to be very good about not overwhelming myself with too many bettas at once, and i've been doing really well. But I'm going to petsmart today to pick up fish food, and I know im going to look at the male bettas... So should I get one? I have plenty of extra tanks laying around... Convince me that I need to save a little fishie from a cup on a shelf! Last edited by Zenandra; November 17th, 2009 at 03:18 PM.

| Ok I went to petsmart, and got a gorgeous new boy, and a new girl!!! I divided a 10 gallon for the new boy and Squishy and the girl is in a 2.5 gallon until I get the 10 gal sorority set up
Sorry the pictures are horrible, I took them with my phone, my good camera was forgotten at my boyfriends house, whoops lol.
Here is the Divided tank
Here is Squishy (he would have been very mad if I hadn't taken his picture, lol)
Here is the new boy James Tiberius York (Yes i am a Degrassi Fan) we're calling him Tiberius for short
and the new girl (I haven't come up with a name yet) |

| Congrats on the rescue! I agree you can never have too many! I brought 2 males and 2 females, along with the 30+ fry with me to Mom's...I have been here about 3 weeks and now have 2 more males and one more female than I got here with. Her house is starting to look like a fish store! I also love the divided tank you set up...it looks awesome!! |

| Congrats on your new betta babies I wouldn't add your female into a sorority tank. They almost always end in disaster. I learned the hard way with my girls and they were sisters who had been together since they hatched. |

The stories of failure VASTLY outnumber the successes and it always seems that the disasters happen when the owner "just stepped out of the room" - you won't always be there to keep an eye on them. (Sorry to be a downer, but it's just scary and sad to think about what happens when these tanks go wrong.) |

| I have heard that if you have enough girls (like 5 or more) they set up their pecking order and it can be OK. I have never had luck with girls together (even when they were mother/daughter.) Actually, come to think of it, our betta fry were mostly ladies and they all got separated pretty young because of bad behavior. But bettas can have different personalities, so it might work for you. You probably would have to add them at the same time so no one claimed it as their territory, and I would keep a close watch on them. I guess it depend if you feel it is worth the risk. Less tanks to clean.
Edit: Do you have two betta ladies? Or do you have others as well? If you have only two my vote would be keep them separate. Last edited by kcarmartinez; November 17th, 2009 at 10:49 PM.

| great looking new bettas! welcome to our crazy world
i also wouldnt attempt a sorority..read up on some threads here about other members attempting this..and most were sisters who grew up together and it still was disaster...also, a 10g is definitely not big enough for a sorority attempt... |

| I would definitely shy away from a sorority as well. I tried it in a 20g I used to have and ended up having to buy a pile of small tanks for the girls when disaster struck. |

| Thanks for all of the kind comments I've had sororities in the past with absolutely no problem, and 4 of the girls are sisters and already live together. So i'm going to see if they'll all get along, and if not I have extra tanks I can separate them in to |

| Cool! You can never have too many bettas! I had Over 25 fully grown at one point!
Look at me, I went out for 2-3 this week and came back with 7. This is how it goes with fighters, they find their way into your heart and take over your home!
I would NEVER put girl fighters in together. I know people do, but in my experience I've found that the dominant female will pick on the weakest link until she succeeds in killing it and them move on to who she considers the next weakest. It is a viscious process and your other girls end up living their life in fear.
My mother as a christmas present a few years ago bought me some girls whom she kept in together until christmas day. She was told by the breeder that the girls were best friends and had been in together since they were fry. He even went so far as to say that if they were separated they'd miss each other. My mother could not understand why in the weeks leading up the christmas the smallest fish mysteriously died. Until it was just the two supposed best friends left. She told me this on christmas day when I was given the two besties. It took me less than one hour of observing them to know what had happened to the smallest fish. And now the dominant female (whom I named Aegialia) had turned on her fryhood best friend (Penelope). I seperated them and there were no more tragic ends. Since then I am against groups of girls. Even my tiny baby girls (2cm big) Electra & Hermione argued when the store clerk put them in the same bag for the trip home (I told him not to but he ignored me). I was lucky there was no fin damage as Hermione just backed down and stayed in a corner of the bag.
By the way it looks like a lovely tank set up for them! Congrats! Last edited by fishtroy; November 19th, 2009 at 07:31 PM.
