14" too tall for bettas? Also, can I divide 12g for 3 bettas?

I made a deal with the hubby that if I get the new job this week, then I am going to re-fill the 12g bowfront for new fishies (who were moved to the new 20g).

I really would like to divide it into 3 parts for 3 bettas (4g each).

It's 14 inches tall. Is that too much height for a betta to climb for air? I will lower the water if it's too tall. Please tell me what height would work.

If I have to lower it a bunch, should I only divide it in two since there will be less water?

I mainly want it three ways because that's one more betta I can save, but I also don't want to save three and then make them all unhappy in only 3-4 gallons of water.

That should work, four gallons is good. Be sure to add some tall plants for the bettas to rest on, and lower the water level to avoid anybody making a break for the neighboring compartment

instead of lowering the water you could add more gravel, just another way to get the job done.

^^ Thats another precaution ... some bettas dig under the dividers, so adding larger rocks or more gravel will aid in the protection of your bettas.

Hahaha - I'll definitely post pics once everything's set up. Actually, I'll do one better and post some live-actions vids!

You could get some deco that are tall and has a flat top for your bettas to rest on. Tall plants would do too. A live action vid sounds good! Keep us updated! Good luck!

It all sounds good!
Make sure there is a cover on the tank so the bettas can't jump the dividers.

Hello ilovee! Everything sounds good and I can't wait to see the finished product. Best of luck with the job! I'll keep my fingers crossed.

the taller plants will be great for the air they need but bowfronts are too sketchy to divide and keep them safe IMO... its pretty hard to have a secure divider the way the tanks are made

I was thinking about that problem too Shawnie. I'm going to use DIY dividers with that plastic mesh sewing material and use aquarium glue to secure it to the sides - that way there won't be room for them to squeeze through the bowed side. I'll update how well this works out. I'm going to try it with some gupsters first to make sure they don't find any holes.

14" is about ideal for a betta, especially with a good layer of smooth rocks or flat marbles along the bottom to keep them from squeezing by the dividers. But it might not be a bad idea to lower the water some since they can jump pretty well.
