| | Fish Helper | Betta in a Planted Tank? Just wondering if anyone has or had a betta in a planted tank and how it worked out? I have been thinking about setting up the 5g minibow I have as a planted tank (it's currently empty and collecting dust) and figured I would rescue another betta. I just never had a betta in a planted tank and wasn't sure how it worked out for anyone else.
Also, would it be possible to use some kind of sand substrate or should I stick with traditional gravel?
I suppose the only reason I am thinking of rescueing another betta is I am unsure what other fish would go well in a 5g tank, if any. If you have any suggestions on another fish for a 5g planted tank please let me know. Last edited by JaneAustenAddict; November 7th, 2009 at 03:33 PM.

| | Fish Helper | My boy loves his planted tank. He has 5 plants in his 5g, and he takes turns laying in each one of them. His favs are the moss and the tall soft one at the back, which always has a bubble nest above it. He also likes his little cave under the driftwood. I say go for it! I'm sure he'll thank you. Here's a pic of mine.

| | Fish Helper | Thet looks awesome! I am definitely going to give it a try. In fact, I already started setting it up!
Obviously I haven't gotten very far, haven't even added the water yet. But, you can see the general idea so far. |

| | Fish Keeper | Your betta will be happy with the planted tank, it gives him something to do. |

| | Fish Helper | Good luck with it! Cute tank, you should have no problem getting it looking great! Remember to get soft plants. I've just found a clumping grass that he loves, it's so soft. You can't really see it in the pic as the fish is right in front of it, but it's only a small piece I broke off the plant in my other tank. Really hoping it grows. Keep us updated on your progress...and we want pics of course! |

| | Master Of Fish Poo! | If you can find them (and can pick up a grow-out tank for the fry), Endlers would love a 5g planed tank. 1 male and 3 females to start would work and the fry would come along soon enough.
A betta would enjoy a planted tank and I'd go with the smooth polished gravel or the small flat glass marbles for the substrate. A lot of gravel not only can give you tons of dust to deal with even after rinsing it over & over, but betta fins tear easily on gravel, which can lead to fin rot. They like sleeping on the bottom too. |

| | Fish Helper | My bettas haven't been in a planted tank so I'm not sure. I have heard that tough plants can result in long fins catching and getting tattered so it always put me off.
Also I once (for a goldfish) bought some plants, with these plants without my knowing came what is called a 'pest snail'. Has anyone had one of these? It was this minute little snail only about .5cm but it released a toxin throughout the water and caused my fish harm. Ever since this experience I have been dubious on the subject of plants, how often if ever does this occur or do I just have really bad luck?
Have been thinking lately that my bettas would like some plants though, so am interested in everyones replies. |

| | Fish Helper | Thanks everyone for all the wonderful replies! Now I have one more question:
Which plants besides java moss and anubias would be safe?
Okay, make it two more questions!
When adding plants do you add them all at once, or a few at a time like when adding fish? |

| | Fish Addict | Planted tanks are a fab idea! I have easy to keep live plants in all my tanks and my fish love them - I have a 20g divided tank with 3 bettas and they all love the plants I have about 2 in each section. |

| | Fish Helper | I don't know why I never considered using live plants in a betta tank before. It just never occured to me. Anyways, went shopping today and here is the tank as of 11/08/09. I don't really like the aqua fern (front right) and it definitely needs something in the background behind the driftwood. I am thinking another Anubias to replace the Aqua Fern and then possibly a Micro Sword in the background. I also need to get some Java Moss, but the store didn't have any in stock today |
