Bless you Rose, what a funny story!!! I know they are happy when they are where the action is.
Anyway, does anyone have ideas on splitting tanks: I probably will go with the 12 g Eclipse, acrylic; but it has the bowed front. Can you buy dividers for these?? ($74 US & shipping) All of my others are Eclipse and they are good looking, nothing hanging off the back, quiet, easy to clean, good viewing.; has a full hood, good flouro lights.
Walmart has some brand ( Regent maybe? ) It is 10 g ; glass; has everything but gravel & a heater ( which I already have in my stash anyway). I am not familiar with the filter - 3 stage - but I mean as far as noise. Would it be easier to divide?? $49 Cdn I could buy a whisper pump/filter system I suppose, but they are outside of the tank. I bought a Whisper as an emergency filter/pump - I think Nat recommended it - and it is very quiet.
When you divide a tank, one side has the heater and filter and the other the bio wheel on the eclipse. I am thinking this will make no difference, but have never done so am requesting suggestions, ideas, etc. I keep thinking of how Storm and Neptune like to swim in the bio wheel current...wish I had an even bigger house.
Help ?
thanks, Val

Re: Divided Tank Question
You won't be able to divide a bowfront. You need straight sides to hold the dividers. I have one heater on one side, right beside the divider and the main filter on one side and a small Whisper 3i filter on the other side just to supplement because dirt cannot get pulled through the holes of the divider so you do need a small filter on the other side.
Put a piece of bonded filter pad in front of the water flow on the big filter (jammed between the hood and front of filter) to keep the fish on that side from being blown away.

Re: Divided Tank Question
I found some dividers at Big Al's website and ordered 3 - different kinds and sizes, they weren't very expensive. I am going to try the 10g at Walmart and if it is too noisy or doesn't work, I will still get the Eclipse and just sell the other one ( or keep it for future fish ?LOL).
Might get a whisper pump for it. We will see how it goes, now I have to try to arrange delivery for bio spira.............hope I can do that!!!

Re: Divided Tank Question
I brought the 10g tank home today, and Regent is made by Marineland.....the Power Filter is Aqua Tech model 5/15. Has anyone had experience with the waterfall movement from this filter ( is it too fast,) and/or the noise, if any it makes. The filter is also made by Marineland, who also makes the Eclipse. It also has a bio filter, just a different kind of set up, no bio wheel.
I will have a look in Minnesota, where I am going there are 3 independent fish stores, as well as Walmart and Target, so have lots to look at.
I also found an independent shipper/received Fedex outlet guy who said he would take the Bio Spira and refrigerate it for me....so I will go ahead and do that soon. The border is so busy on the weekends, so will have to arrange for it to arrive on a weekday.

Re: Divided Tank Question
I found bio Spira in Bemidji yesterday, have it home, as soon as I get the dividers, hopefully tomorrow, I can set up the 10g. No more whining from me about cycling. Although, there are stories of failure with Bio Spira in the Nitrogen Cycle thread.............hope I am not one of them LOL Then you will really hear whining!!! Val

Well Val whining or not, am definitely curious to hear the outcome with BioSpira. I just don't get the whole not cycling thing with your tank. Am really curious to see what happens now.

Re: Divided Tank Question
Ya that not cycling was bizarre, I was faithfully adding blood worms, heat was high, well you know all I did. I emptied that tank tonight, and got the 10g set up. I bought little Tiny King last week, he is a tiny crowntail ( hence the name). He has great double fins, and he swims around the Q tank with his fins spread ( not flaring) lots, so he is really pretty to see. His dorsal, caudal and anal fins all cross over each other. I did post pictures, on the betta fish thread, but they dont show his colours well -- white body, cellophane pectorals, and fuschia and purple fins and tail. So I am going to share the 10 between him and Wink Jack Sparrow, since they are both little guys!!
I really would like to get him in tomorrow if I could. I have asked for some advice on the Nitrogen cycle thread. Tank is all set up, but I need a 50w heater, so for now I put a 25 w in each side. And I also need plants to put near the divider, since I am sure they will be seeing each other. Although Neptune and TK don't flare at each other, and neither do Storm and Wink even tho their tanks are side by side. Should be interesting. Wink doesn't get to go in right away, since he has a little fray, and I am treating him.
So, stay tuned again. I now also will have 2 empty tanks, and I really really would like a little girl betta, or two............................or a community tank of regular old fish even....................really, they are a lot of work getting started aren't they??

Well, with BioSpira you are cycling really.. you're just 'cheating' by adding the 2 types of nitrifying bacteria that a cycled tank has (one for ammonia, one for nitrites).. kind of like reading the end of a book first.. you get the end result without spending so much time getting there.

HI Val
I had the two males in the divided tank ten gal tank. Not sure if it was problems or not, but.... they constantly would flare at each other, one more than the other. It doesn't let up. Had them like that for a few months til I moved one to its own ten gal tank. I don't believe they get used to these conditions and that they will always flare at each other. I think that its stressful on them and thats why I finally moved one. Probably two females would work out better with a divider. Now that Precious is out of her 2.5 g and in a ten by herself I plan on using the divider and get another female to go in there with her. I will let you know how that works out. Some say that the clear divider will eventually discolor and they will have a hard time seeing each other, but I found that it does not. I have asked around if there were any marine paint etc that I could use to color the plastic but never got any advice on that so I assume there isn't.
Going to look and see if that pure white female is still at the LFS this week!

Re: Divided Tank Question
Well the deed is done, and I hope they will soon stop flaring. TK really takes himself far too seriously I think. Each f these guys were close neighbours to Wink/Storm and TK/Neptune. They could see each other well, but hardly did more than look.
They each have lots of plants, hiding places and caves, so I am hoping they will settle down. After all this screwing around, cycling ( or not LOL) new tanks, no counter tops left, water changes every two days for the little guys.............yikes.........too much. I am going to go the plant route first and hope that helps, maybe a couple of these long floating plants : from F&S:
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...1&N=2004&Nty=1
Anyway, I hope they tired soon, I am already tired!!
And I am sure it is twelve oclock somewhere! Val

We haven't gone to the cabin yet, so I have had lots of time to watch them. Tiny King is a juvenile delinquent. Wink Jack Sparrow, as brave as he is, will back down first.....however, he still hasn't figured out that he is in a new tanki and can swim around differently than that manic dance he did in his small hex. Too funny. All he knows is right now he wants his neighbour to move, oh ya, and when food comes.
I added some Stress Therapy today, and for awhile TK sat next to the divider going " Cooooooooooool Man........can we have some tunes?" LOL I believe it is slowing the flaring down a little, but nothing major. I actually am quite surprised at how aggressive TK is.........I think I read somewhere crowntails are that way..............a little pellet of food in Wink's tank floated over to the divider and they both went for it.........pretty amusing. Food still can get Wink's attention, or anyone walking by - you must stop and talk. When we leave, he goes back to the divider.
I am placing an order tonight with F&S/Pet Solutions/Big Als for some tall plants. I am sure that is going to do the trick.
I also am trying to decide if I should put that little Azoo Palm filter ( can't believe this little thing has a flow control on it) on the unfiltered side, or a sponge filter ( I have had no experience with those, assume you use a little pump with it? Any ideas on which would be best. I can see the water moving, but definetly taking a little longer in the unfiltered side. I added Vita Chem on either side to watch how it dispersed.
Neptune keeps going to the side of his tank that TK used to be on and looking........he either misses him or want to confirm his good luck at not having to share space with him!
So since it is just over 24 hours they have been together, I'd say things are going well??

Re: Divided Tank Question
yea, i love those little azoo palm filters.. great value for the price and a pretty good little filter. yes, the sponge filter just would hook onto an airline. i think which filter you use depends on what you want.. the sponge filter will hold more good bacteria but have a low impact on moving the water.. the azoo would do a good bit more for water movement and surface agitation.
crowntails do seem to have an extra bit of fire in them. mickey is quite the little flarer and often misses his food being to aggressive in attacking it. should the plants not work, i think a bubble wand laid right in front of the divider with a good airflow might do the trick.
I'm sure Neptune misses TK in his own way.. they are territorial, but i think at some level form bonds.
