question about bad case of fin rot

I am living in a dorm at college, over this past weekend I went home on friday and my roomate thought it would be a good idea to feed my betta even though i told her not too. She fed him 3 times a day as much as he would eat. He was dead when I came back Sunday night. I mean I know he was about 2 yrs old. But still I was very sad because he was one of my first rescues.

Anyway, my roomate mentioned to one of the other girls in our dorm what had happened and one of the girls down the hall had a betta that she just gave to me. Apparently it looked like it was dead and wouldn't move around anymore. So she didn't want it. She was keeping it in a bubbling lava lamp. No heater. No filter. The lamp was about 3 inches across and the stream of bubbles filled the entire thing. No wonder the betta was in bad shape.

Anyway. I just put him in the freshly cleaned 5 gallon tank my other betta was in. This new betta is missing most of his tail though. There is less than a centimeter left. It is definately fin rot. And his dorsal and ventral fins are in pretty bad shape too. Other than keeping the water clean and warm, is there anything else I should do to help him? He was kept in the lava lamp for about a month.

I'm really sorry about your betta
Thank goodness you're able to try and help the one given to you.
First try pristine water, a couple drops of garlic juice, some extra stress coat and vita-chem.
If he doesn't show signs of improvement here's a list of Betta medications

Best of luck.

Well I had already added the stress coat+ and the garlic guard. As for Vita Chem, none of the stores around me carry it. I will have to pick up some next time when I go home. Thanks!

Ick... roomies. I had a friend with a similar problem last year, her roomie was always feeding her fish without permission.

Fin rot can be nasty, but I'd advocate natural methods/treatments before meds, especially since finrot tends to be symptomatic of stress/other problems. There's great advice above, the folks here are sure to have some answers

Here's hoping for a full recovery for the little guy... *sends some positive fishie energy your way*
