Hmmm, that's a good question Tony. I keep my betta boys by themselves and have never attempted tankmates for them. You could try it, keep a VERY close eye on things, and have the 32g as a backup plan if it backfires.

This may be one of those "depends on the personality of the betta" situations.

I'm no expert on Betta's Tony, but I'm pretty sure that you shouldn't have sand as a substrate in a Betta tank as it's not good for them. Lucy or Shawnie should be able to comfirm..............

Good point, Nick. I missed that part about the sand.

I'm not sure I would use sand in a betta tank Warning about use of Fine Sand as Substrates in Betta Tanks
Kuhlis do hide part of the day but at dusk and dawn they can be very active and they need to be kept in a group(at least three). I personally wouldn't mix these two.

thanks for the link!

Ya, I don't think kuhlis would really go with bettas. Cories can if your betta isn't too fiesty, but I'd feed them cucumber slices in veggie clips as bettas seem to love algae wafers and can get constipated from them.

Mine are out day and night and are the most active swimming fish in their tank. They play and lay together and swim around the tank. You have to have enough of them to feel comfortable - I have 7. When I have one in a 10 QT (fully decorated), I never see it.

FYI - They can wiggle through the AC filter strainer (others too I'm sure) and get stuck, so if you can't find it look in the filter. I had to cover my strainer with mesh because they kept killing themselves.

I don't see why they wouldn't mix well though.

What's wrong with sand and bettas?

they can swallow it while picking food from the bottom and since they cant digest it they can die.

I actually do have kuhlis in with two of my bettas and they get along okay but they are in BIG tanks where the two types of fish very rarely meet and never get in each others way. It is not something to be done in a 5 or 10 gallon tank for sure. It is not an impossibility in a large tank but I mean a large tank and then keep the tank very understocked. When a betta is in a tank with other fish you need to plan out a large portion of the tank for the betta not figuring by size of fish. The betta needs to have the top half of the tank to himself and do not plan on other top dwelling fish in that tank. Also realize that the addition of any betta to a tank where other fish are is totally up to the betta to decide. If he or she says "no way am I living with these guys" you better have an alternative plan as someone has to leave.

Kuhlis are interesting and worth the buy, as for being slow they dart around the tank like nutters when I move a rock they are under and all I see is a big blur lol! You will enjoy them in the 35g but get 6+ to help them feel comfotrable their bioload is supposed to be very small too!
