| Water Flow I have a few fish tanks in my home and my son wanted his own. So set up an extra 12g nanocube for him and let him pick out a fish. So got the tank cycled and ready and went and picked out the fish today. He picked a pretty lil male betta. Now he's in the tank but seems to be very upset about the waterflow. Seems to be too much movement for him. So the question is will he get use to the water movement, or do I need to find a way to slow it down some or move him to a different tank (which would require buying a new tank .) ??
Help please! |

| I would slow it down with some filter floss coming out of the outtake area....sometimes the bettas freshly rescued cant handle that strong current...please share pics when you can and congrats to you and your son! |

| The tip Shawnie gave you is one of the BEST tips I have ever read on this forum. I literally went through 5 filters in 2 days on Aadyn James' tank searching for one with low output and then someone suggested this to me. I can use any filter now and minimize the current and the bettas are happier for it! |

| I mostly use air driven filters now for my betta's but the filter floss thing works amazingly! |

| Bettas build up swimming strength in time but a variable flow filter (or finding ways to slow the current) is good for them to build up the flow as the betta gets stronger. |

| the poor lil cup bettas don't have the muscles to swim in a strong current... use that trick and eventually he will build his muscles... |

| I headed straight to the store after Shawnie's reply and got the needed fix. That was so simple and worked perfectly. He seemed instantly happier. Thanks so much!!!
It was lights out time by the time we made it home from the store or I'd have gotten some pics. I'll try and get some tomorrow. My 2 year old son picked him out and I think he's beautiful, but the boyfriend said he was the ugliest one in the store.... SOOoo I'll need to post pics and see if I was right |

| My son named him Fin. I tried for almost 15mins to get a pic of him but never got one. He's so frisky swimming around I can't get a still shot. He must be happy to be out of that tiny cup. I'll try again for pics once he settels down.
He has a tank mate, a knight goby. I had pretty much been planning this wouldn't workout well, so have been watching them and can move the goby to my angelfish tank if needed. Earlier Fin went after the goby and I got the net, but once I got back the goby was chasing Fin. I kept watching and they settled down. They even went in the same little log and laid down by eachother. It was cute. I though maybe the Betta would tolerate the goby but they seem to actally like eachother. |

| I put my betta in a 14g biocube. At first he was very upset by the current, but now he loves it. I hadn't thought about them developing the muscles to swim in the faster flow, but I guess that's what happened. He seems very healthy and happy now. One of his favorite things to do is to plaster himself against the outflow grate. I guess he likes the water flowing by him. The first few times I saw him do this, I thought he was in trouble. But as soon as I lifted the lid to rescue him, he'd swim away. He's so much fun to watch. |

| A lot of bettas enjoy a good swim into the current. |

| I've been very slowly increasing the flow and he seems to like it. Just don't want to do too much at once and freak him out. |

| Pics of the new fishes. The betta is now "Fin" and the goby is "Doby" lol... My son named both of them.
Can't wait to see what they look like once we have had them for awhile longer. I think Fin will be pretty. Last edited by hayanna; September 24th, 2009 at 11:29 AM.

| That's the way to do it with them. We just got a couple new bettas from Thailand and they've been learning to swim in filter flow a bit at a time. |
