Is She a He?

Hi,
Here is a dumb newbie question. We went to Petsmart to buy a female betta. They all looked like typical females except for "Franky". I inquired with the staff and she said Franky was a female. A 10 year old expert (12 bettas) also said that Franky was female because of some white spot on her. Franky also flares her gills when she sees our other males. Do female flare?
Signed,
Confused Parent

This fish appears to be a male veiltail...Fins and ventrals are too long to be a female...Yes, females DO flare but they don't usually have such long finage...Pretty color whatever it ends up being....

IMO Frankie is a female, she also looks like an adult. Do you see a white spot between her ventral and anal fin?
It's called an ovapositor or breeding tube.
Yes, females flare. Cami does it all the time.

I'm sorry, I know you didn't ask, but I hope you'll consider getting her a heated filtered tank. She doesn't have much room to swim in a vase.
In case you haven't seen it, here's our Betta Care Guide

She's a real beauty, congratulations. (so is the baby in the background lol)

Edit: lol MM. I dunno, she reminds me of cami, her ventral fins are long.
Of course, I could be wrong.

I knew you would say it is a female Lucy lol....There is that possibility for sure....She may just be older hence the long finage....She is rather ROPUND too....

OK fine, I'm not sure on this one lol....A photo of him/her flaring would help....

lol MM. Since I have a male now I can see the difference between flares.
Studly does more of a full face flare. Cami's flare is more on the sides of her face. Not the correct terminology, just a discription. lol
I've never seen Scarlett flare.

The best way to tell is.......

Put the tank in front of the t.v ( Football game ) if the fish watches the game and askes for a beer and a sandwhich, it's a male.

If it makes a run for the door, it's a female.

No worries Lucy ... his/her 5g tank is being cycled as I speak. We keep all our guys in heated/filtered 5g tanks. I will see if I can spot the "spot" I will try to post more pics as well.

The egg spot should be pretty easy to see given it's coloring (if she's of age).
Looking foward to more pics of your beauties.

That's it I'm done. Unless I see an egg spot, I'm not making anymore guesses.

Wow ... thanks for all the feedback. I will continue to look for the egg spot. Does anyone have a pic of what an egg spot looks like?
