Is Tink too chubby?

I am really getting worried about this girl. She is so fat, and I don't know what to do. I thought it was constipation, and tried feeding her peas and that didn't help. Could she be holding eggs? I put her in next to Gonzo (with a divider) to see if being next to him could help her release them. What do you guys think? She's eating fine, but I just don't think this is normal.

Hello MissMTS. She sure is a big girl! I hope she is going to be ok. I'll have to let the Beta experts help with your question though. If the peas didn't help I'm not sure what to suggest. She's beautiful

she looks identical to what my belle looked like only belle was even bigger...and she was egg bound...is she one of MM's kids?... I tried just about everything for her to release them from fasting to putting her beside a bunch of different boys to entice her to release ....finally when she became lethargic, I put her with naki..eggs are gone and belle is her normal self again...not the way to do it im sure, but she is my granddaughters pink girl and if I had lost her, id have been in major trouble...

She's eggy for sure! I'd put her in a cup and float her in Gonzos tank and see if this helps her release eggs...Sometimes a large water change works too..She sure is cute!

How does this happen to a female if she hasn't been spawned? Does she just produce them and then lay the unfertilized eggs?

They will often produce eggs whether or not they have a male around. I saw one of my females who was living alone lay eggs and then eat them lol.

Thanks so much for all of the advice everyone. I have had her floating in a cup in the tank with my boys for about 24 hours. I put her in with Gonzo first and he didn't really respond to her, so I switched her to Fozzie's compartment. Nothing really seems to be happening. Is there anything else I can do? I feel so bad for her because her tummy is so swolen.

Shawnie, did you have to actually spawn Bell and put her in the tank with Naki before she released her eggs?

Maybe try putting her in there in something permeable instead of a solid cup so that the hormones or whatever from the male can reach her? If I remember correctly, your dividers are solid and glued in place so there's no water transfer, right? Maybe that would help a bit.

Thanks for the suggestion Pink. I actually have had her floating in a cup inside the boys compartments. I need to see if I can find something that will let the water flow through but still allow them to see each other clearly. I was thinking maybe a breeder net but the ones I've seen are to opaque.

If you could poke holes in a see-through cup.... or... had a clear fine mesh you could fashion into a cage.... or.... I dunno, something... I'll keep brainstorming...

yes kate they flirted for 2 days together in a tank..then then he finally figured how to properly wrap her...once I saw the wrap and her skinny again, (about another day) I removed her and she is better..the spawn lasted until day 3 when he ate them ..

well bella was lethargic and not herself and huge so thats why I made the decision to do the wrap....only thing is kate to have a deffinate backup plan if the eggs survive

....I cant tell you to release her and only you can decide if you think she is suffering from the eggs....bella was and I felt it was the only way to get her some relief....I conditioned them both for a week or so prior and used a bare bottom 10 gal ...although no eggs made it im so very happy I had done it as bella is back to her normal self and neither naki or bella were violent....good luck with tink!!

Hi guys,

She is just looking so imcomfortable and swolen, I feel so bad for her. Her scales on her tummy even look like they are protruding now.

Shawnie, I just think I am to nervous about putting her with a boy. I have no idea what I'm doing and I don't have the means to take care of babies right now if eggs were to survive.

Pink, no I didn't find anything else to put her in yet. I ended up just putting her back in her own tank this morning because she was just so stressed in that little cup.

Dave, yes her ovipositor is completely visible. What does that mean?

Kate maybe you should go to a LFS and see if they will give you a betta cup then poke holes all over in it so the water can flow through and put her back in there after she calms down for awhile. Maybe the hormones and smell of the other betta will help her drop them pesky eggs. Women have it tough I'll tell ya, even women fish..lol...I really hope she drops them soon. I know it's awful having a fish in need but not being able to do anything.

I will swing by after work and see if I can pick one up. I just can't seem to catch a break lately with these girls. I hate it that she hasn't released them yet because I feel so helpless.

One tip that I've read about for egg-bound bettas is to touch the ovipositor with a q-tip to stimulate egg release. I've not tried it so I'm not sure if it works, but it might be worth a try if things get to the point of trying something like that.
