| Awww, she's a cutie. Could she have hurt herself on something? Maybe there's a growth underneath that you can't see? |

| I suppose it's possible.... there's all live plants and the fake driftwood thing... but I wouldn't think that she'd jam her chin into the driftwood...
Growth is a possibility, although I'd have no idea what that entails... |

| How is she acting? eating? Is it her gill area or the operculeum( the part that flares). don't know
But did want to say I love the 6th pic in the first batch. Looks like she's just going to come out of the screen and kiss me for the sweet girl

| She's acting totally normal and eating just fine. Looking at it closer... it seems to be the operculum. But it's hard to tell.
I gave her your kisses and she had some for you too |

| Fishie kisses are so sweet (they're usually bribery for food LOL)
My males (pumpkin)operculeum doesn't go all the way back in. It looks like he's in a small partial flare all the time. Has been that way almost since I got him a year ago. Looks very similar.

| I don't think you should worry pink, she certainly looks healthy to me all my other bettas had their gills slightly out. I knew there was a problem if their gills went in too much.
she looks like a very nice and healthy betta |

| As long as she's acting and eating ok, both are good signs.
Darn betttas make us worry, don't they? |

| If she's eating and acting normally, I would just keep an eye on it and see if it gets worse.
She is a very nice-looking young lady and you took some FANTASTIC pictures. I really like the "reflection" pictures. |

| Amanda, I wouldn't worry too much about this..It is actually pretty common..Sometimes ammonia poisining causes this but I know you take excellent care of your tanks so I doubt that's the problem...Your marble boy has a gill that stays open too so don't freak out where you notice it...He has been like that since he was a wee swimmer... |

| My boy Ray was like that, I'd keep an eye on it for swelling but it's probably like MM says and is harmless. |

| Lol, I can guarantee it's not ammonia poisoning. They're in a 20g now that has been up and running for over a year! (and water tests check out too of course)
I knew about Merlin's little issue... I can't wait to meet him. When they have little 'handicaps' it makes me love them even more.... like Winter's lopsided eyes and pec fins...
Thanks guys |

| Ya, we've had this happen before with one of our bettas and eventually it corrected itself. Sounds like a happy & healthy betta. |

| I'm sad to say that Alyosha has gone extremely downhill in just a few days. She is laying on the bottom, won't come up for food, and it looks like her gills are torn up. I don't know what to do. I've put her in a floating betta cup with holes poked in it because in her weakened state the other girls will probably turn on her, if they haven't already (her fins are torn). I am clueless about what to do for her. |

| I talked to Dave yesterday, and he suggested parasites. I started her on treatment. She looked absolutely awful.
But I'm afraid it was too late. My baby is gone
