Is my fish a loner?!

I purchased a male crowntail betta and two neon tetras today for a five gallon tank. The person that got the fish for me at the store said that tetras would be fine. Well, about four hours later, I found my betta with his mouth on the tailfin of one of the tetras, and now both are dead. Is my betta naturally overagressive then, or did the fish guy not know what he was talking about? Should I keep him by himself completely, now?

Hi welcome to Fish Lore

I'm really sorry about your neons.
Most bettas don't make good community fish, especially in such a small tank.
I'd suggest you let him have the 5g tank to himself.

Good luck with him

in a 5 gallon tank i dont think i would add a tank mate. maybe a nerite snail. some bettas are just more aggressive then others. ive kept mine in a 20 gallon community tank with no issues, for other bettas this would never work

it all depends on their attitude. i have had a male betta in a 50 gallon community before and he had no issues whatsoever. sorry about the neons. i would suggest only having tank mates with bettas in a 10 gallon or larger tank.
