This might be a stupid question, What is Splendens?

I think the title says it all, just a question that popped into my head just now

Splendens is a latin word meaning "shining" or "bright".

As part of the scientific name betta splendens, it's the species name, distinguishing the common betta from other species within the Betta genus.

Can I also ask a silly question? I just didn't want to make a thread for it...
How do you pronounce betta? Is the bet part like "I make a bet with him" or does it sound like 'bay'?

Well they just have a different look Well there are over 20 species of betta, So there really is no easy answer to that question. But if you had a look at a betta species that wasn't "B.splendens" You would clearly know

I say betta like "Bet Ta" lol.

I just want to throw this in, But really the domestic B.splendens That we have isn't a pure species anymore. The domestic bettas are hybrids of different species in the splendens complex and It's REALLY hard to find a pure splendens and if you do it's going to cost a bit.

I suppose they are both correct, it just depends on which one you preferably use. I say betta as "bay-ta".
