What do I need for a Betta??

I have a 40L tank wth a heater, corner filter, pump and canopy. I would really like a male betta, 6 glowlights and perhaps my syndontis. And an Amazon sword plant.Would that be alright What food does a betta eat?

Bettas eat bloodworms, betta pellets, etc. I don't have one so others could give you more exact advice there.
I think it wil do fine with the plants, but make sure you have a back up plan for the glowlights in case they don't get along. Would not recomend the syndontis, I just googled them and if I got the right infor they can get to be up to 12 inches and eat smaller fish, so i don't think that would work. Maybe you could get three panda or pygmy cories instead?
Set the heater to about 80*F, and your good to go!

You are well prepared for a Betta arrival. You will need to buy Betta pellets (Hikari and Atison's are very good brands), freeze dried worms (Hikari again), frozen worms.

Here's our betta care guide:
Welcome and Betta Care Guide - Please Read First!!!

Personaly, I wouldn't put a betta in a 10g with 6 tetras. More times than not someone will get hurt or killed. They don't really make good community fish.
It sometimes works in a larger tank, however, you'll see people say all my betta is fine, he hides in his cave.
To me, thats unfair to the betta. They have terrific personalities given the proper living conditions they'll be able to show what wonderful fish they are.
I hope you re think your stocking plan.

You could try a betta with some cories or otos, but it depends on the bettas personality.

Good luck, whatever you decide.

I agree... Bettas don't ever really thrive in a community tank.. They need more individual attention.

I think you are right, I think I will try the single betta with a few cory cats.

My tank has been cycling for 2 days and pH 7.6, ammonia 0 Nitrites 0 Nitrates 5. Would it be alright to add a Betta yet.

If you're readings are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 5 nitrate, it looks like it's cycled.

Did you by any chance use water from your established tank? (That could account for the nitrate reading)

No, but my tap water is almost ready before it goes in the tank.

Sounds good then.
Congrats on such a quick cycle. IMO using gravel and filter media from an established tank is the best way to cycle.

Go get your betta and son't forget the pics.

Sometimes. It depends on the betta's personality.
Have a back up plan just in case.

Ok, will get a betta with 3 cory cats and if they fight I can always move the cory cats to my 55 gal.

Yeah, got my Betta today...Bright blue. I also put in my small 5cm sailfin pleco in there too. I can move it to my 55gal eventually when he gets bigger or if the betta attacks him. Will post pics soon. Any names are welcome

i have 3 bettas i used to put them all in diffent tanks but i got tired of cleaning them all so i got a 10 gallon and got some dividers and put them all in the same tank.
All the stuff i have is a heater, filter, dividers, gave them all a plant, rocks and i use betta pellets or bloodworms.

So people put there bettas with other bettas or fish and it works fine i don't think its a good idea i have never a success with putting them together.

I have a female in a 36 gallon tank with neons, glowlights , harlequins, otos and cories and everyone is happy. She swims all around the tank and seems much happier than she was in the 5 gallon...much more active. When I first put her in she flared once when a tetra came to close and was a little jumpy ( after being alone for months it must of been a shock to see other fish) and then she was fine. No one bothers her and she bothers no one. Her egg belly has gone down in there. She was so full of eggs ( maybe just plain fat ...lol) that it was pushing her head up...now that she is swimming around a lot and not in sight of the males she has lost some of that belly and is normal again. Any how just wanted to say it worked for me with this female....havn't tried with the males.
