coffee mug as betta cave

Hello there.

I'm sorry if there is info. here somewhere, but my searches weren't turning up anything.

My question is.. are coffee mugs safe to use as a "cave" in aquariums? I mean, like your traditional ceramic, glazed mugs. I've been hunting on google and cannot find anything solid there either.

I think you can use regular coffee mugs with no fear. Only decorative type of mugs is dangerous.

As long as there are no sharp edges for fins to catch on a betta might really like that

Thanks for the advice.

My only concern was the paint on them. Now, the paint is under the glaze. And the only thing I found online about ceramics in aquariums, was that anything "dinner safe" was also aquarium safe; due to the strict guidelines involved in making ceramic dinnerware safe for humans to use to hold food/beverages. But I wasn't sure how true that information was. I mean, I understand the concept, but it's not like we keep such things underwater for unspecified periods of time.

So you think even that they are decorated, as long as the painting has been fired under the glaze that it will be ok?

Welcome!
I have caves that were hand made, painted and glazed. They have been under water for years and I haven't had any problems with them so I think a Mug would be fine

Cool beans, that's good to know. I think they might make very interesting decor.

Heck, I never drink out of them anyway, lol. I have a huge jug of iced coffee every morning in my plain glass cup. The coffee mugs gather dust.

I once had a glazed aquarium decoration that leached out something into the water..but it was old that may have had something to do with it...I think a plain ceramic glazed coffee mug would work fine.
