Well the aggression in
betta splendens was a trait bred into them through the Thai people of Thailand who used them has fighting fish.
Naturally the most aggressive fish would win fights and Then those would be bred again and again with each generation becoming more aggressive then the last.
Wild betta's like my Betta smaragdina which is related to B. splendens and Which the Thai people of northeast thailand use to fight and crossbreed with splendens to make the aggression and other traits better in that line. Betta smaragdina can and is kept in pairs or groups with more then one male per tank.
When i bought them i had two pairs and i kept them together in a 10g. The biggest male become the dom and Kept the other male away, But never gave him more then a torn fin and I once seen them both have a bubblenest built with fry in each.
Sadly two of them jumped, But my biggest male and smallest female is still here and Do to my inexperience i wasn't able to raise the fry to adulthood, But i am trying to breed them again and I may get a spawn in the next few days.
