Stand or no stand?

Okay...I bought a 29 gallon without thinking much except for fitting my bettas in....Now, I have another thing in mind...I plan to put the stand on carpeted floor in one of my rooms. Does it actually need a stand to distribute the weight or it would do fine on the carpet? Do I need to put a layer of styrofoam underneath the whole tank or a plank of wood or something? If I can get away without a tank, I would like to do so.

I would imagine that a 29 gallon tank full of water would have enough weight to flatten out the carpet pretty well but for esthetic (sp?) purposes I think a stand would be much nicer and easier to acess for cleaning and feeding. It would be really hard to get suction with a gravel vac with the tank on the floor making cleaning the tank difficult.

Would a 29 gallon filled with water stress the floor joints? It would be about 330lbs.

Never really thought about it until I bought the tank..kinda feeling stupid right now

Don't feel stupid, I set up my 30g and never gave weight a thought.
Are you on the first or second floor? That might be a consideration.

2nd floor. Never really had to think about that with a 5 and 10 gallon lol. Didn't think a 29 gallon filled with water will weight that much either but what a shocker when I found out it weights 330lbs lol but a 29 gallon is small considered to the 55 gallon or the 75g or 90g...so I think it should be okay?

it shouldn't be a problem, comparatively 330 pounds isn't all that much. what would help is if you get a piece of plywood to put on the floor, it's surprisingly strong and will help distribute the weight

the weight should def not be a problome i have a 125 gallon tank on my second floor and we have no issues with that. but i agree with the fact that the gravle pump would be harder to get going with the tank down so low

I second this

I actually put 2 cinder blocks under the plywood under my spare 29g in case I spilled water. It also made it easier to make sure my tank was going to be nice and level, and getting it a little more off the ground helps with water changes if you use a siphon, which is gravity-fueled.

29 gallons is uptoward 200+ pounds.
They recommend a stand.
Wouldn't a carpets soft and flexible surface maybe stress the seals on the tank and make it leak after a long time?

I think it's not so much the weight of it, as the area that weight is distributed over. So putting a board of some sort would likely make it more stable and reduce stress points, just bc as pointed out carpet is soft.

My television weighs over 200 lbs and the entertainment stand it sits on is solid spruce and weighs over 100 lbs (and yes, I have thought it would make an awesome aquarium stand...) Together they're over 300 lbs and I'm on the main floor but my floor is wooden and over a crawl space; it's not level anywhere and creaks a lot and well that's the main reason I haven't gotten a bigger tank (yet) - but my tv has yet to fall through the floor in the two years I've been here
