20 gallon or 29 gallon for betta????

I am thinking of getting a new tank to divide it for my bettas and that way, I only need 1 heater for all 6 of them and I only want to maintain 1 tank and use the 5 gallon as hospital tank and the 10 gallon in future for some cloud mountain minnows. I was originally contemplating on getting a 20 gallon long but I am open to getting a 29 gallon as well. The only difference between the 20 gallon long and 29 gallon is the height of the aquarium. 20 gallon is 12" height and 29 gallon is 18". Which do you think I should get. The difference in price I believe is about $6. Is 18" height going to be too high for the bettas? Or would they appreciate the extra water?

If money isn't an issue, and equipment isn't an issue, it definitely wouldn't hurt to get the taller aquarium. I think the betta's would be happy in either one to be honest.

20 gal. long is the best. I have one divided 5 times for bettas. Bettas like longer tanks rather than taller tanks.

i'm with amanda, bettas are labyrinth fish so they have to breathe air from the surface. longer tanks are better for them because it isn't as difficult for them to get to the top

I got the 29 gallon. For a couple bucks, I went with a bigger one. I could always fill less water and that will prevent the buggers from jumping to their neighbour's section too lol. I have live plants and driftwood so that will help them rest near the surface as well.

I have hunted for a used one online but all the people that were selling them used are actually trying to make money off the aquarium that they are selling so I'd rather buy a new one if I have to pay the same price and need to drive far to pick it up. Its ridiculous that some of them charge you more than a new tank for a used one!

Thank you very much! I am so excited about my new tank already. The only thing is, I can't carry it out of the car on my own lol! Can't wait to cycle it good thing I have a current media filter running yay! The best part is I only need 1 heater instead of 3-4 so I can save and invest on a Stealth since I am so paranoid about malfunctioning heaters.

For my betta's I added more gravel to shorten the tank. I like the way it looks too!

That is a good idea! Since mine will be a planted tank, the extra substrate will help!

Unless they're sick, it's really not too tall. If they want to stay near the surface, like you said, having driftwood and tallish plants with broad leaves will help them out. If they do get sick, you can always use a breeder box to help them stay up better. I know people with bettas in 55g and bigger tanks in community setups and they have no problems

It's funny how everyone is all wussy about tank height for bettas but no one questions tank size for a gourami..
