| Problem with my new Betta Hey everyone!!
Well on saturday our daughter beat us down until we agreed to get her a fish. She found the most beautiful female betta, she's a couple shades of pink. She picked out a tank and we got home to set it up. We noticed that night that the tank was leaking so we took it apart set it out to dry and will take it back. In the mean time I have her in a BIG fish bowl with a couple gallons of water and all her decorations. I've changed the water regularly, but she won't eat. She has not eaten since we got her home. We got her at PetCo. I really didn't get want to get her there, but the Aquatic store didn't have any females and my daughter really wanted a female. Her name is Trixie and she's so pretty but we are so confused. My male begs for food, lol! I noticed a white spot on her side up by her head and a grey looking mark also on her side by her head.
I know we take chances with LFS bettas but any ideas?? She's so pretty and my daughter will be heartbroken if we lose her. My husband thinks we should take her back.
I don't know what to do!!
thanks!

| She may take a few days to start eating, all mine have.
Does the white spot look like a grain of salt? If so, it may be ICH.
Is there any way you could post a pic? |

| DO NOT go by what i "think" i see or write (im too much of a newbie myself). The spot looks too big to be ich. I really cant help you other than to say that if it is ICH, you would need to raise the water temp and do water changes.
Sorry I cant really help, I am SURE someone else will be here to help with more knowledge than I.

| So the silver stuff and that white spot is normal?? It wasn't there when we brought her home. |

| The silver is her gill cover, she's just starting to color up.
I don't see the white spot, lol, so I can't help you there. |

| Now I feel like I'm going crazy, lol!! In the first photo, I know it's not real clear, but just to the right of the silver is a white patch. When I look at her in her tank it looks like a white bump and it's pretty good sized. She's also really lethargic, she either sits on the bottom or floats at the top of the water. I changed the water about an hour ago, I hope that helps. |

| She's still in the bowl? She may be acting lethargic b/c there is no heater, and it is not filtered. If it is indeed ich, you need to get her into a filtered/heated tank ASAP.
Well, she needs to get into a tank ASAP anyway. |

| Thanks Amanda! The spot is pretty big and doesn't look like ich. Her water is at 78 degrees right now. I'm in Dallas and it's really warm and she's in one of the warmest rooms in our house. I'm hoping it's just stress. I plan to exchange the tank out tomorrow and get her all set up again and back in by wednesday.
I started cycling a 10 gallon saturday. I can't wait to stock it!! |

If that was my betta I would continue with the water change, and use API stress coat plus. And also, I agree on the not eating part, they do that most times in their new enviornment. Any other suggestions, hopefully will come from a member who has seen such a spot. good luck, and wishing your little one healing. |

I started cycling a 10 gallon saturday. I can't wait to stock it!! | if the 10g is almost cycled i would put her in that so she isnt in a non cycled tank and then cycle the other one, when it is done cycling you can move her into it and add the fish you want into the 10g. that way all your fish are happy lol good luck and hope this helps ya. |

| Midnightwolf...we just started cycling the 10 gallon saturday. I plan on putting our adult Molly and Platy in it with others and leave my 3 babies in our 5 gallon tank and use it as a nursery tank. I think I have to start over though. The piece of wood we have in it has turned the tank a light tea color. I thought I had soaked it long enough last week, the water was clear but now it's leaching more. |

| the tannis, (tea color) thats in the wood, wont hurt anything.. I wouldnt start over...it doesnt look nice, but it will just lower the pH a bit ..if you dont like it, time and water changes with some carbon for 3 weeks should make a difference |

| Oh good!! Thanks Shawnie, I feel better now. I thought I'd ruined the water. I've been "feeding" the water twice a day and have the light on 24 hours a day. The temp is close to 90 and I've ordered a full blown test kit and hope to get it this week. I just have the test strips. I don't have any plants in there yet, not sure what I want to do.
question...will this help...I normally clean my tanks on fridays, if I take some out of my cycling tank and add the water I remove from my 5 gallon will that help or hurt?? |

| no need to use eachothers tanks water..there isnt much beneficial bacteria anywhere in the water...so id use all fresh treated water for all the tanks and their water changes |

| Just wasn't sure if the water I take out of the 5 gallon would help to cycle the 10 gallon.
thanks!! |

| your welcome..most of the bacteria you want is in the subtrate, filter media, decorations etc...more on solid things..although some is free floating im sure, not enough to make a difference IMO |

| Your Bettas are both beautiful. I am having trouble seeing the spot as well. You're not crazy, though, it's easier to notice these things on our own babies than in others! Best of luck, and I hope she feels better soon. |

| Ok, so Trixie is in her new tank and swimming around. She is showing some interest in food, she is picking at it but not consuming it completely. I figure that is a step in the right direction.
thanks for all the help! |
