betta sorority?

More confirmation here than q, just checking: I've noticed a lot of happy folks lately posting about their betta girls in sorority tanks...if I'm understanding correctly, these will work provided the girls grew up together and even then it's a good idea to have a backup plan just in case aggression issues arise. Meaning that me going to the LFS and acquiring 4-5 girls who've never seen each other and putting them together in a 10g is likely a bad idea (or a time bomb)? I don't know atm of any breeders nearby, and prefer to save some from cup-death regardless.

yeah, you never really know what you're getting as far as temperament with cup babies. i tried a sorority with three girls in a 10 gallon what feels like forever ago when i first started keeping fish, because i had two girls basically dumped in my lap with nowhere to go, and i read that sororities can sometimes work so i went out and got a third and put them all in there. one of the girls i picked up is hera, and she is a hunter, i would never consider putting her with any tankmates that i didn't want to get eaten! (i put snails in there sometimes if i'm overrun and find empty shells all over). another of the girls is artemis, and she's perfect in a community as far as temperament, she never nipped anyone, but she was a bit too fast for them and ate all of the flake food for the other fish and got extremely bloated, so she had to be removed. then the last girl, persephone, i ended up giving to a friend because i just didn't have the room for her.

When we first started out, at the advice of the 'fish expert' at our local petco we put 4 girls into a 10g tank with all the plants and caves we could fit in. It lasted less than a day.

If you do a sorority, deffinetly go with sisters that have never been separated. My Miss Piggy is the sister to all of my sorority girls, but since she has been in her own tank for a month and a half I would never ever consider adding her back in with the other girls. If you do decided to set up a sorority, getting girls from a breeder is your best bet.

Hmm, this confirms what I thought. On to the next stocking option for the 10g...(and at least one cup baby, by him/herself in a 5g tank!) Thanks everyone for your input

I would never attempt to put girls in together if they had not been raised in the same tank..It is a recipe for disaster..It's risky even when they have grown up together..A divided tank with a few girls is a much safer bet!

Good luck!
