Divided Betta Tank: Work in Progress

I thought I would post a pic of my divided betta tank that I am working on. I am using a 20 gallon long tank, and dividing it three times to house 4 bettas. I went to Home Depot and got plexiglass and had my dad cut it for me into 11.5 by 11.75 squares. I still need to go back to home depot and buy one more piece of plexiglass because I am one piece short. I used aquarium silicone from home depot to seal off each compartment. I am using glass bowls from the dollar store as betta caves and margarita glasses for little resting places for the bettas. I am in the process of siliconing everything in right now. I painted the back of the tank with black paint. I have a glass top that I will be using with a plastic strip on the back that will allow me to put a HOB filter on each compartment. I have black and white marbles from the dollar store that I will be using for substrate. Other than that I am not sure what else I am planning to add. I am really open to everyone's suggestions. Let me know what you think so far

I just did that for my bettas, except I divided it for 5 bettas.
It's so great once it's all done.

Thanks guys. Its the first real DIY project I have done for my fish, so I am so nervous about it turning out okay.

Amanda, I seriously considered dividing it 5 times. The only thing that kept me from doing it was that I wouldn't be able to fit the filters over the backs of the compartments because they would be too narrow. I would love it if I could keep 2 more bettas in there though

Ah yeah, my filter is skinny, so it fit.
I love having all the boys in the tank together, so much color in one tank!

What kind of filter do you have? I ordered the smallest one that Drs Foster Smith had:

That is pretty awesome! My husband is getting tired of all of the tanks around the house, and I may want some more breeders, so maybe this diy is in my future! You should post a detailed pictures included in diy post for this, because a lot of people may want to do this!

HI Kate
looking good so far! I have also seen these azoo palm filters in Drs F&S and really like them, they are great for small tanks.

its coming along great kate!!! heres a great filter for the seperated tanks and it works awesme...sometimes you need a little bit of extra media to slow the outtake down and depending on each betta, sometimes they are fine in the current

Great little canister Shawnie.. but wouldnt that be taking up the room inside those dividers? Kate would need one in each compartment and that leaves less swimming area for the Betta's.

its only about 2-3 inches wide and one each fits in the 20 gal divided 5 times

Thanks Heather It deffinetly is a space saver. I'll take some more pics when I put the last divider in and some pics of the tank all set up and create a DIY post for this project when I am done. Its really a simple project. The thing that I like best is that with the plexiglass dividers I won't risk transmitting any diseases between fish which was a huge problem for me last time I had divided tanks.

Thanks Kate I like that they are so small and don't take up much room in the tank. I ordered three of them, so I hope that they work well. I actually realized that I need one more because the flow rate on the filter that I have at home is going to be too strong for a little betta in a 5g compartment (its an aquaclear 50 lol). I am not sure whether or not it is worth it to order it with the extra cost of shipping or whether I should just go to Petsmart and get a small filter for around $15 from them

TY Shawnie I'll have to look into those. I had an internal whisper filter in one of my betta tanks before and I didn't like it, but the kind that you posted the link to looks really cool. I already ordered my filters, but if they don't work well that's deffinetly something that I will try out.

It looks like it you could easily hide it behind a plant or other decor Do you use these in your betta tanks?

PS: I am totally kicking myself for not dividing this tank into five instead of four I would just add two more dividers, but that would make the other 3 compartments really small (3 gallons each......) since I can't move the dividers that I already siliconed in. Hmmm...... should I just leave it how it is?

Hi Kate,
personally if it were my tank, I would keep it at 4 compartments. I still try to give my guys at least a 5g space, but a 3g IMO at least for me, is just too small an area, tho Im sure it works for others, its just a personal preference for me and personal preference is something that you would have to go on as well.

I agree, 5gs is much nicer I've had bettas divided into just over 3gs each, it works, but looks rather crowded.

Thanks for the imput guys. I think I will keep it at 5 gallons per fish. I remember when I had my 10 gallons divided 3 ways and it was a tight squeeze for my fish and a little hard to watch my fish since the compartments were so narrow I don't think I would have minded having five 4g compartments, put since the first two dividers are already in place, I think I'll stick to my original plan

Yes I just finished it today. I was out of town all weekend, so I finished it as soon as I got back. I will fill it with water tomorrow, but here's a few pics of it finished without water inside I will get to work on that DIY thread. I took a lot more pics of my materials and the process.
