Unfortunate event

As mentioned in my thead new betta, I got a new betta today. But then my betta Jessie flared and fought her. This has lead me to two terrible choices. Either give it to my mom so she can put it at a bowl at school, or leave it in the tank with my other betta. Which do you think I should do? Your opinion counts. Thanks for your time.

YIKES..sound like a really bad deal either way..I say neither..But you need to get the betta's separated asap!!..One of them will end up dead if you don't..I would try to find the Betta a home where it can receive the proper home.

The way I see your opinion, I would rather get a divider. The problem is my mom doesn't want to get me one! I have to make a choice soon.

Well..Here's what I would do...Put the betta in the bowl if you have too, but just untill you can find it an appropriate home, Meaning get a divider...get another tank....or find it an appropriate home...Betta's don't do good with tankmates they prefer to be by themselves..Especially other betta's..

Could you explain to her that they need the divider to live? Or talk her into a 2.5g minibow tank instead of a bowl? Tropical fish just aren't meant for bowls, particularly fish like Bettas that get easily bored or depressed.

Getting a tank is not an option unfortuatly. I really wanted to get another betta because they are so great. But I think the best choice for now is to put it in abowl till I can get a divider or home.

I probably wouldn't have a choice. This is a hard decision and only a divider will work. If only I could be sure the betta would find a great home if I sold it back. . .

That means another month waiting for cycling, the heater, the filter, the gravel, etc. Like I said, a divider seems like the only way out.

I looked at your tank info and it looks like you have a community tank but with two bettas...Community tanks are awesome but betta's don't really belong in a community tank..They are awesome little fish and I can see why you would want them, but they won't be happy together or with other fish especially tetra's. It's a very hard decision and it looks like you really care about your fish. I wish you luck with whatever you decide to do.

I think one of my bettas would be fine cause she doesn't bother them and they don't bother her. I've decided to try and talk my mom into buying a divder. Wish me luck trying to persuade her to get a divider.

I don't know. . . I should show this to my parents. They'll probably say no. But maybe if they say yes, that's an option.

Honestly IMO your two options aren't options at all...Putting her in a bowl is no life for a betta, she'll be depressed and end up ill from no heat and no filter. Leaving her in the tank is certain death for 1 or both bettas. I would find homes for both of them or rehome the tetra's and get a divider for them..Research is an awesome tool, we have all made mistakes but at least now you know the importance of research and compatibility of fish.

Maybe if you show your parents this article on betta care:
Welcome and Betta Care Guide - Please Read First!!!

Perhaps it would be a good idea if you read it also.

I agree with Cesch, neither option is healthy for a betta.

Yeah. I'm sure a divider is the answer. Lucy, you keep pulling links out the way a magician pulls a rabbit out of a hat. And I'm sure i've educated my parents well on bettas. The main reason is the fighting.

My mom is returning it. I know it's going back into a cup. Unfortunatley my mom says no to a divder. It looked constipated and probably it will die.

Now she wants to put it in a bowl. Well, at least it will have a home and will be fed.

If you have constipated betta you need to do something immediately, they die from that! Feed her pieces of the inside of a pea, and skip other meals until she get well.

Please, don't keep 2 bettas together. Separate them ASAP. If it's not possible to get another tank right now use a bowl. Just keep water clean and warm. Hopefully you will be able to find a better place for the betta really soon.

How am I supposed to keep the water warm?

I don't mean to sound harsh catfishlover but had you done some research you probably wouldn't have put the 2 bettas together in a 10g in the first place. At least not with out a divider or back up tank in case things didn't work out.
What you're supposed to do now is provide the best possible home for the pet you took responsibility for. That means getting him at the very least a 2.5g heated tank.
It's close to impossible to keep a bowl warm let alone give the betta some swim room.

I'm with Lucy...If you adopt a pet you assume responsibility for it. Her little life is in your hands...It's up to you what you do with it. I wish you all the best though. It seems like you really care for your fish so hopefully you will do right by her.

Like everyone on the forum, i'm addicted to fish, but mostly bettas. But I got this info from petco's freshwater fish chart. So if you want to point fingers on this situation, it's petco to blame.

We're not pointing fingers. We're advising you to the best of our knowledge through combined years of experience.
Did you get the info that's it's ok to put 2 bettas in a 10g from petco's freshwater chart? Did that work for you?
You asked for advice and we gave it.

Sorry you feel like we are pointing fingers but ultimately you are the one responsible. Everyone has made mistakes but it's what we do to rectify the situation that matters. Even if you didn't to the proper research, got bad advice and made some mistakes you now have the correct info, knowledge and advice to do what is right instead of continuing on the wrong path.
