The females can be the 'toughest'.. our Chloe is the most fiesty of our Bettas. She's a cutie, I guess it's good she doesn't realize how cute the flaring makes her, the little tough girl.

Nice pic ...yeah people say male bettas are mean and females are peaceful, but really I think the females are worse, if only because they have less finnage so they can get around faster. The only betta I've ever trusted enough to put in with my dwarf cories was a large male....

I think if depends... if the female was really young then I would put her in a community. but then there's always a slight risk as she grows up. I think the Males make too much of a nippy target. However having said that I've got a female who is like the perfect community fish and Mama (pictured above) is half her size and would probably terrorize anything that was in with her.

I had female bettas and pygmy cories in a tank together and unfortunately the pygmy's tended to disappear
