Wow what a lot of information on these forums. I recently inherited a tropical tank and was concerned that I didn't know enough. However, I have had a male betta in a 1/2 g set up for a year and had no idea it was such a bad situation. So I resolved to treat him better and got Blue a 10g tank. Poor little guy must be very resilient. Eventually I thought I would get 1 male and 2 female Platys to keep him company and provide a source of food. Is that a good idea or no?

Glad you're enjoying the forum.
How exciting for Blue to get a 10g mansion. Some members have had luck keeping corys or otos or a snail but have a back up plan in case that doesn't work out.
Most bettas don't make good community fish and prefer to have the tank to themselves.

I wouldn't try anything else flashy in a 10 gal. I have a female betta in a 20 gal. community & a 55 gal. community - but they have room to stick out their own territory.

i wouldnt keep platys with him they have similar shape and can have similar colors to a betta and i can almost garentee the betta would beat them up

best betta tank mates are small bottom feeders or inverts and even then some bettas are just best keep alone (bettas have thier own personalities and it varys alot in some cases)

on a lighter note best of luck to you in future betta keeping 10g will make your betta very happy and healthy

Unfortunately Blue will never get the chance to enjoy the 10 gallon. He died today. Probably as a result of the poor conditions I've kept him in for the last years. I won't do that again.

I'm sorry that you lost him.. we lost our first Betta before I started using Fishlore and found help in learning Betta care. I know there's a new little Betta waiting to come home with you.
