This guy is definitely more mellow than Devo (so far). He's a little shy, but "cautiously curious," if that makes any sense. He's exploring everything, but he's not as boisterous as Devo has always been. With Devo, I could run up to his tank and jump up and down like a madwoman, and he would just sit there and patiently wait for food. I don't believe I've ever once seen him spooked since the day I got him.
This guy, on the other hand, does come up to greet me when I go over there, but he spooks more easily. When I clicked off the hood light he freaked out a little. The corys are the same way, they tend to spook a little if there's quick or fast movement in front of the tank (unless there is food involved, in which case a meteor could fall in front of them and they wouldn't notice).
Devo just isn't afraid of anything at all. I think if he ever saw a piranha coming he would sit there and flare, and be like, "what the heck are you doing in MY space, homeboy?!" |

| Since I only have one other, I'm wondering if this is normal for a new betta...
Devo was all up in my face from day one, not scared of anything at all. This guy, while he explored quite a bit yesterday, has so far been very very shy this morning; when I turned on his light he hid in the stump, and so far has not come out. I did not feed him yesterday, because I thought it would be a good idea to let him settle in first.
Have any of you had bettas that started out pretty shy, and would hide alot for a few days? It's only been since yesterday afternoon, so I don't want to really start worrying; it's just that I'm not used to this behavior, since Devo is so obnoxious!
*edited to add*
If it matters, the employee told me he was one of a recent shipment, so if that info. helps... maybe all the moving around might make it harder for him to settle, having just gone through the shipment process? Last edited by haedra; March 15th, 2009 at 09:08 AM.

| Everyone one of the babies is different. I'd say first let him settle in. If you're concerned you can add a capful of garlic gaurd and stress coat to his tank. He should come around. |

| Some bettas are rather shy when you get them. I had a girl that when I first got her was scared to death of anything moving by her tank, but within a few days she was attacking my finger |

| I don't know, guys. He seems to be getting more sluggish as time passes; now he is laying at the bottom of the tank. When he does swim, he is holding his fins tighter to his body. Still won't eat, though I admit that doesn't concern me as much as the fin clamping and sluggishness. I am getting worried. |

| Yeah our Oscar is very shy, but Mercy says "Look at me and how gorgeous I am!" They are all different, and I would just give him some time.
Congrats! |

| Hmmm... I'd suggest possibly a de-wormer, does he look thin and dull?
Usually fin clamping is a sign of discomfort. If his symptoms don't sound like worms then possibly a broad spectrum anti-biotic may be in order to head of anything that he might have before it it's serious. If you'd rather not treat without knowing what's wrong then stress-guard, vitachem, garlic-guard and anything that you can think of to help baby his immune sys. His parameters good? |

He looks "normal" in every other way. No odd spots, no torn fins, belly looks to be the right size, his coloring looks rather great, actually. Temp. is right around 79. I used quite a bit of gravel from my 10 gallon, coming up 0 for both ammonia and nitrite.
For now, I've been trying to keep the area his tank is in a bit darker to lower stress levels. Since he has no other visible symptoms of disease, I've been told that he could just be reacting to the change in environment. Since they are all so different, maybe this one is more sensitive to environmental changes? It's tough for me, because my other guy has been a snarky, vivacious little thing since day one. |

| Hmmm... I'd try the stress-guard vita chem ect. route. Won't hurt him any. These Betta babies do make us worry. (I missed a whole day of classes for Fuzzy.) If you're interested you could try looking into some indian almond leaf, betta breeders seem to swear by it as a basic cure all.
Keep his stress down and keep an eye on him. Try to notice if there's anything in his tank that seems to bother him.
<hugs>
Wish I could be more help.
All my babies are sending smarten up vibes to your boy to tell him to stop worrying you |

| Well, I think he heard the vibes, at least a little bit!
He is still not eating, and his fins are still clamped, though less so. But this morning I swished his food around the surface, and while he did not want to eat it, he at least was nosy enough about what I was doing to keep coming up to the top and looking at me. He explored a little bit too, which is more than he's done in the last couple days. So he might be coming around. |

| Hmm maybe he just doesn't want my food?? It was suggested to try something that sinks, like brine shrimp; as he might be younger and not used to food like I have (both pellets and bloodworms, for treats).
While he is still very shy, he does seem very curious! When he saw me over there earlier, he came out of his "cave" and did a few wiggles for me, then took off back to his hiding spot. It was if he way saying "look ma, at what I can do!" It's funny, but he can't seem to help himself if I take off the top to his tank and swish his food around, but to come investigate. I swear, it's like he's almost he's using the excuse of "needing" a breath of air at the exact time just so he can see what I'm doing. I rarely see him needing a breath the rest of the time, but all of a sudden it's go time when I'm there.
Shy little thing, but it is quite endearing. I love Devo, and he is about as opposite to this as you could get; a big, boisterous fellow that thinks he owns everything in his line of sight. So this is a new experience for me. |

| Well! We've graduated from completely ignoring the food, to looking at it funny then swimming away. I can almost hear the little gears in his head, trying to decide if he was hungry enough to try to eat it or not. But at least it's something!
I have been wondering though...
I know bettas are very different in what they can tolerate. While both his tank and Devo's are exactly the same, they are both in minibow 2.5's, and they both have Red Sea Deco art nano filters; the current is turned down to the lowest on both. But maybe Poseidon is more bothered by the current? I don't know if this is the case, but thought it might be a possibility. I would have expected Devo would have more of a problem due to being a veil tail, but he doesn't seem to care one iota about it. Though I suspect the new guy might be younger. | When alot of these babies come home and get in a proper tank it's the first "current" they've ever experienced.
I think that if he's not being pushed around by it then he's probably fine Have you tried garlic gaurd? Sometimes soaking the pellets in that can encourage him to eat. |
