| Fungus!!! Ok so this is a new one for me.
I looked in on my new boy this morning and he's got grey/white fungus patches all over!
I don't know where they came from, either the was already infected and I didn't notice them before, or else the filter I'm using (came from the 32 gal where Oscar my Paradise fish died. I wasn't home when Oscar died so I don't know what killed him but he was just thick in fungus but I'd assumed that was after death... Red has shown no signs...
So what do i do? |

| poor guy i use jungle buddies fungus clear tabs and they have worked very well for me for various things. i dont think i've actually used them for fungus but they worked really well for fin rot a couple times.
you may want to turn the temp down just a little bit, maybe a degree or two, and that should help slow the growth. i'd go ahead and do a water change as well. |

| Only Meds I have on hand are Tetracycline, Jungle "Lifeguard", Jungle Parasite cure, and Aquarium Salt.
Of them the only one that say's it'll treat fungus is lifegaurd, but you're supposed to use it with this special net... that is being used with Mer right now... I suppose a fishnet would work as well?
Also the heater is pre-set. |

| i've never heard of the lifeguard, why do you need a net for it? |

| I don't know it just says that it has to be used with this specific floating net that comes with the package... I think the idea is that they want it suspended in the water instead of sitting on the substrate...
The net they give is just a floating foam ring with a net "bag" in the centre...
The box says:
"Lifeguard is a broad spectrum non-antibiotic agent that treats the clinical signs of disease at their earliest stages in frewshwater fish. Added to your aquarium water the powerful oxidizing action of HaloShield attacks and destroys disease-causing microorganisms.
You don't have to be a fish expert to use Lifeguard. With this all in one treatment there's no need for time-consuming guesswork. Each pre-measuered dose treats infections ailments such as fungus, ick, red streaks, milky or shedding slime, flukes, bacterial gill disease, mouth and fin rot, clamped or torn fins, and ulcers. May be used as a preventative when adding new fish.
Directions: (summery) Add one tablet/day to each 10 US gals of aquarium water USING THE ENCLOSED TREATMENT APPARATUS. Use treatment for 5 consecutive days @ 24 hour intervals..."
Sound like it should work?
Also just did a water change... will test and also post pics... |

| interesting, yeah i'd assume it's just so that the meds don't settle in the substrate. which i find interesting because the jungle tabs that i use you drop in the tank and the fizz and the meds literally get everywhere. but i'd go ahead and use your net to be safe, and it definitely sounds like it should work. that's a pretty generic list of diseases for a med to treat, i've got a few others that do the same thing and work well |

| It's really my only "Do all" med at the moment. I needed one that was a general for Mer's treatment... guess it was a good thing I picked this one. :s |

| I'm really sorry your little man isn't feeling well.
Before assuming it's a fungus, you might find this article useful: Flexibacter
I have another link explaining it, but I can't find it right now. |

| lol, yeah. i prefer the more specified meds because i prefer not to treat unless i actually know what's wrong, and if i know what's wrong then why treat for 12 things when you can treat for one? but it's cheaper and easier to have at least a couple generic meds on hand. |

| Thanks for the link Lucy.
I'm not sure if after reading it I could even tell the difference.
However I'll give you a bit of a picture time line.
The first 3 are from yesterday afternoon/evening... then the ones I just took now, around 12 hours later. The gray patches look fuzzy and raised.
Other symptoms... "panting and rapid gill movement" Before he was floating near the top not moving now he's just sitting on the bottom... I just did a WC (slightly less then 50%) am gonna go and test in now...
Temp appears to be roughly 26*C |

| Red, that's why I linked it. For a long time I thought if it looked like a fungus, than it's a fungus. Not necessarily true afterall.
Ugh, wish I could find the other article. It mentions that since Flexibacter and fungus are easily confused a lot of anti-fungal meds are forumlated to treat both. I know that doesn't help, since you really want to know exactly what meds to use.
I'll keep looking. |

| Thanks Lucy. <hugs>
I feel really bad for the little guy. He was fine yesterday and now this...
Anyway prelim. Water tests aren't indicating a problem... NH3= 0
N02=.1
Haven't found the nitrite test yet but I don't think that will test anything but 0 either. Will keep looking anyway.
Should I add some aquarium salt? The article does mention that. |

| I've always been skeptical about salt no matter how many time or where I read it.
Some sites swear by it yet others advise against it. Even here, the opinions are mixed. |

| Sorry about your buddy
I have heard that most fungus meds include some antibacterial meds as well just because it's hard to tell, and lots of 'fungus' is really a bacterial infection. |

| Aha...found the other article on flexibacter.
It mentions using Fungus Eliminator. Maybe that's worth a try since it might very well be a true fungus. |

I'll see I've already put the first does of Lifeguard in... This is Mer's last day so I can more the "real" net over to the new boy...
I don't like being so worried about him |

What are the ingredients in Life Guard? Maybe Fungus Elim. has some of the same? Last edited by Lucy; March 13th, 2009 at 01:20 PM.

| Post #5 has the back of the box. The active ingredient is 1-chloro-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-4-imidazolidinone |

| Ok, the ingredients are different in Fungus Eliminator.
Good luck, I sure hope the med do the trick. I also think you should name him |

| As in watch it spread as you're looking at it or see an increase after your last look? |
| |
March 13th, 2009
|
| | Fish Master
| an increase since I last checked on him... literally it moving fast... should I unplug the heater? I can't adjust it...
Also I moved him into a breeding net. I wanted him to be closer to the surface... |

| It might be a good idea to slowly lower the temp. Bacteria and I'm pretty sure fungi (the kind we see outside the aquarium, anyway) grow faster in warmth.
Gosh Red, I wish I had an answer for you.
Take a look here: JBL - Online Hospital
Maybe you'll see something that looks similar. Last edited by Lucy; March 13th, 2009 at 03:16 PM.
