opinion--

I have my current betta in a community tank... a 33 gallon with some ottos and glofish (danios). I just freed him from the cup this week. All of the tank mates leave him alone, I am just concerned that the flow at the top of the tank is too much.... I'm running a penguin 350 on this tank. SO-- should I move him to my empty 5 gallon Eclipse, OR should I leave him and rescue another betta?

note: The flow only seems to be strong on half the tank, and he isn't showing any signs of distress....

OPINIONS PLEASE!

Personally, not for filter reasons, I'd move him to the 5g. Bettas in community tanks is a gamble. It might work for now but it could change at any moment. One day you may wake up to someone hurt or killed.

I'd have to agree with Lucy on that...it's a coin toss whether or not they will continue to get along. One morning you might wake up to either danio leftovers, or some danio just can not seem to leave flowy pretty fins alone. However, if you have experience with betta in community tanks (lots of folks have great success, my favorite lady at the LFS swears by it...it don't work for me, and I see you've been keeping fish a lot longer than me), couldn't you just block the flow at the output a bit with some filter sponge and rubber bands? I have a 200 on my 30 gal, and I think they are built pretty similar. I had to do that because the output was upsetting my angel. Just make sure you get it under the lip of the output so you don't stop your wheel(s) from spinning...not that it actually matters if you have plenty of filter media in there, but it's still a cool little gadget, LOL! Good luck to you.

I have had a few in community tanks with success... mostly I have kept bettas alone just because I usually have multiple at a time. I just love these little fish. The danios are schooled and very fast swimmers, they just don't seem interested in him or anything else for that matter. I may move him just because... I am just trying to figure out how to rescue one more betta.... maybe I'll put him alone and put a female in the community tank. Sigh-- decisions.

Get a 10 and divide it.

You know, it's almost against the rules to tell us about your betta with a pic.

although I agree with everyone about addictions, more tanks, no communities etc, I do worry about them in the bigger tanks..the cup babies arent usually strong enough for a few months to handle bigger currents...their finnage is weak from lack of swimming and restoring their "muscles" from a cup to a big tank...you could wake up to him stuck to the filter intake as they sleep so soundly at night...we would love to see his pic tho!!!!! and I hope he does well

That is something really important to consider. I was just kidding about dividing the 20, but if one where to divide a tank...do you suppose if there was a small filter on one end and a small filter on another you could divide like a 20 long? Not actually planning something like that, but just thinking.

Well now....that's some coolness to know! Are you doing a small filter on each end too or just 1?

just one with bubble stones in each section...each of my dividers are big enough holes to move things thru them...although once a month i do move the filter to a different compartment

I have 2 community tanks with bettas in them,I love them in communities. I have one in a large 55 gal. with a larger filter, but my betta just hangs out on the other side.
