| Do Bettas jump? Hi
I read that the water level should be 3 inchis below the edge of the tank so that the betta can't jump out. Can they really jump so high (I guess 1,2 inchis)? Has someone ever seen a Betta jumping?
Thanks for your answers,
Mirjam |

| yes!!! my bettas jump like crazy, luckily most of my betta tanks have hoods that cover the whole top of the tank (the 5 gallon kits), and the ones that dont i'm getting rid of as soon as i can afford to buy new 5 gal or 10 gal kits |

| LOL..yes betta jump Mine didn't for the first 2 weeks I think, and then he scared me when he actually leaped out of the water and grabbed his pellet right out between my fingers. Remarkable, a , for sure. Then he jumped, when I didn't expect it, completly out of the water with his whole body and clunked his nose into the glass when he landed. I have a hooded 5G tank, I wouldn't think of not having a hood at any time, not with that guy. Im sure yours will jump when you least expect it
....its quite awesome and ok to let out little shriek!... |

Remarkable, a , for sure. | Alpha jumps for his food, too. I found out on accident like you did, and now he does it whenever I want. I just wet my finger, stick a pellet to it, and hold it a centimeter or two above the water, and he jumps up to grab it. Super cute, I just hope it doesn't give him any ideas. The hood is secure, so I don't think there's anything to worry about. |

| They will jump from one side of a divided tank to the other. I lost both my little girls because they were jumpers.

Carol | Hm, maybe I shouldn't encourage the jumping, then. I'm going to divide Alpha's 10g, so I wouldn't want anyone getting hurt. |

| I watched them flex and over the divider they went. The divider was at least an inch above the water line.

| Of course they jump. I actually teach my bettas to jump by wetting my finger and attaching a freeze dried blood worm to it. Then I put my finger about an inch over the water and watch the betta jump for it. |

| I'm glad I don't have a divided tank... I tried it with my Betta- and yes! He jumped for his pellet I'm sure my landlords upstairs could here me... I was pretty surprised the first time. It's so cool and I think it's a good exercise for them. I'm going to train him now to jump through a ring and then I will post the video here.... Let's see how long it's going to take..... |

| I've only ever had Hermes jump, but only when I have food in my hand. My other guy is more... docile and timid... doesn't seem much of a jumper. |

| I know this thread is waaayyy old, but...
Is there any way to know if your betta is a jumper without finding out the hard way? All my tanks have tight-fitting lids, but you've got to take those off to clean them. Last night I wanted to do a big water change on my new female VT's tank. I've cleaned the tank a few times with her still in it, all the while nervous that while the hood was up so I could vac she'd jump out. The tank sits on a dresser against the wall - the dresser's pretty heavy so if she ended up behind it well, I'd have a bit of an issue...anyway, for the big wc last night I decided to remove her to be safe. I took her out by dipping with a cup, then put her in a 1/2g covered clear plastic container. She immediately got amazing bad stress lines (like when I first brought her home) and rolled over on her side and floated at the top! I swear I thought she'd had a heart attack (I nearly did!) So I rushed through the wc, she's fine this morning and I will never do that again if I can avoid it. So how do I clean the tank with her in it without worrying too much about her jumping out? like are females more likely than males to jump, bc that's what I've read elsewhere and that's why I'm concerned? (she hasn't tried to jump at all yet to my knowledge. My other betta I can walk away with his tank uncovered and not worry at all). |

| Hmm, I've never seen any of my bettas jump (probably bc I'm not home all the time to witness) - the first I knew of bettas jumping was reading about it here on Fishlore.
So if the water level's low enough they can't jump out, that makes sense. But then how do you get the water level that low without removing the cover? I need to get the siphon in there to vac! (or a cup to dip, depending) She's usually nosing around at whatever touches the surface, my hand, the siphon, whichever, curious little thing |

| Most of the time, when you come up to the tank they are nosey and want food...all my kids are like that but when they see the siphon coming in and not my hand, they back down...if yours doesnt and is still jumpy with the siphon there, you are going to have to figure how to get that water level lower before trusting her...maybe a big pan or container to remove a whole lot at once? they cant get out with a water level 4 inches below or so..unless they are mighty bettas!! (I had one long story but funny as heck!) |

| Yeah when I'm vaccing she's nosing around the vac and at the surface (kinda like Why is it going down Mom? ) What I did when I was cleaning the tank last time was 1) the lid is hinged so let it hang over my hand. Hurts, but does the job. 2) drape a towel over the top of the tank while I vac. I want to (ideally) be able to remove the water WHILE vaccing, as I don't want to remove 98% of her water with ever cleaning, I don't like changing out that much as IMO it's not healthy for them (too great a change in water chemistry). I could just keep using the towel I guess. Cute little nosey thing - I don't ever want to freak her out like that again.
Another option would be to swap her with my male VT Ivan (in a 3g eclipse) that one is pretty tough to clean but I could probably run the vac through the little trap door on the lid... |

| Well they jump like MAD lol. I train my bettas to jump for food and at least once all of them have missed their mark and jumped out of the tank, But i put them back in and they are ready for their pellet lol.
Well case in point. My male PK jumped out of this cup i had floating in his tank cause the new water was a different temp and He did it when i was out of the house. So i came home and found a fish chip Last edited by Shawnie; June 17th, 2009 at 09:27 AM.

| I've never seen either of my bettas jump. But I'm definitely thinking of teaching them too. Sounds very cool and fun. |
