Which Fish?

I have another one! Question that is

While I'm not quite ready for my new friend yet - obviously I'm looking at them in the places I'm visiting.

I saw a few today with big massive beautiful fins, but that were really sort of.... boring? Maybe they were bored, but they weren't overly active yet looked in good condition.

Then I saw 2 really lively ones who were swimming about & playing like crazy, who's fins were a little tatty looking. They were also quite small...

I'm kind of more drawn to the lively ones, I'm assuming if they were living in the lap of luxury with me they would grow & thrive & their appearance would change would it?

Not that I have to have a stunning fish, but I don't want to get one which is ailing as my first fish seen as I'm a beginner..

The lack of activity is probably just because the temp is so low in those cups.
Pick the one that grabs you! There's one out there, and when you see him, you just wont' be able to leave without him!

They aren't in cups they're in a big tank with little neons. It did look boring in there tho... I'd be bored if I were the fish.

I really liked this crazy little blue guy but he's pretty small & unimpressive looking. Plus the work experience kid in there told me he'd been in quarantine not long ago so maybe he's not a great pick...

Oh, well that's a better store than most!
Bettas will change drastically sometimes when given proper care. I like to use the example of my Rodya.
Here he is when I got him:

And here he is only about 6 days later:

You'll know he's the right one when you find your guy

Very weird. You can already pick one out and the one that you are destined to have will make you see him or her. Happens to me every time.

Cool Well I won't be getting him til at least next weekend now so I will see who pops out.

We have a pet store near where I work which has them in cold water cups, half of them are dying its obvious. They have femailes in heated tanks and males in cold cups

The garden centres near me both have aquatic centres inside and (apparently) expert staff, and they have the fighters in large heated tanks with tiny fish like neons.

I figure a cup guy wouldn't be a great idea cos he'd probably be less likely to survive?

A lot of people on FishLore have had success with cup bettas. Some have even nursed them back to health when they were in bad shape at the time of purchase (not recommended for a first-time owner). However, in my opinion, you're more likely to get a healthy fish if you buy directly from the breeder. Another advantage is that you can find out the parentage and age. Do you know about AquaBid? Also, there might be a breeder near you in England.

Cup boy or Aquabid, whichever way you go, good luck! I'll bet you can hardly wait!

I didn't know about Aquabid! I'll have a look at that...

I haven't found my boy yet then, because no one is jumping out at me that much.

I keep looking at my empty tankt hinking I hope he's not depressed being in it on his own, it looks huge! But I guess it is empty at the moment which doesn't help. By the time I have plants & toys & things it'll look busy.

I'm not gonna go for one that needs nursing if I can help it, not til I'm an expert!
