| | Fish Master | Sick Betta, Fin Rot + Other? My friend's betta was looking very sick today (laying on the bottom of the tank, not eating, barely breathing, greenish color instead of his usual blue), and when she changed his water it was very apparent that he had fin rot, which we are currently treating him for with fungus clear tablets. However, he looks like he may also have either ICH or something else but I really can't tell. Also, his eye looks strange. I'm working on trying to get a picture of him, but we only have cell phones and the pics aren't clear enough to see. If we were to put in any other medications, would that be too much for him to handle? Last edited by agabr123; November 19th, 2008 at 06:57 PM.

| | Moderator | I'm sorry you're friends's betta isn't feeling well.
What size tank is he in?
Is it heated? Filtered? Cycled?
Sorry for all the questions, the answers will help the members figure out what's going on. |

| | Fish Master | He looks like a gorgeous betta. Poor little thing
If the fungus clear you used was Jungle brand, then they say that all of their "Tank Buddies" products can be used simultaneously.
I think knowing more info may help:
What tank size is he in?
What temp?
What are readings for nitrate, nitrite, ammonia?
EDIT: Lucy me. lol |

| | Fish Master | Right now he is in a 1/2 gallon because his new home, a 1.5 gallon is cycling. It has been cold because it is too small for a heater and filter, but she does weekly water changes. The temperature now is about 75-76 (I put him under a lamp in our quarantine tank). I'm working on getting readings right now, but he just got a 100% water change which was treated with Prime and a little Stress Coat. |

| | Fish Master | With a tank that small daily water changes should be done. If you can somehow get the temp closer to 80 that would be ideal. |

| | Fish Master | I will see if I can get it up to 80, I just put a towel around the QT so hopefully that will help some. |

| | Moderator | I agree with PFP, getting the temp up will do wonders for him as would a bigger tank.
If he has ick slowing raising the temp to 84F and leaving it there for at least 2 weeks will kill the ick. Vacuum the gravel, if there is any to get the spores out.
Increase the aeration to make up for the lack of oxygen in the warmer water.
If you can get Vita-Chem and Garlic Guard that would help him as well. In place of Garlic Guard, you can use the juice from minced garlic in a jar.
Good luck, I hope he feels better |

| | Fish Master | He is looking much better today, his bright color has come back and the Jungle Fungus Clear tablets are working wonders on the fin rot. Luckily his fins didn't have any holes or torn parts, just very grey around the whole edge. If he had anything else I think those took care of it too. Thanks for everyone's advice! |

Higher temps help them heal. Betta do best in 5gs. More water is better for them. Smaller the tanks the easier it gets dirty which make them hard to keep stable. |

| | Fish Master | I think it's around 78-79 now, I don't have a spare heater for him so I wrapped the QT in a towel and put it under a lamp and check it every so often to make sure he doesn't fry. |

| | Moderator | I agree with Allie....5g gives the betta room to move and is easier to maintain water parameters and temp. Especially if there's a light on the tank. It can increase the temp when it's on and decrease when it's off. |

| | Fish Master | I'm not sure if she's willing to get a 5g with a filter, heater, etc. as well as all of the water treatments (she's using ours right now) but hopefully I can convince her to at least get him something bigger! |
