| Betta death this year, 2008 I have noticed that a lot of people here & on some betta forums have been losing Betta like crazy. All different illness or reasons. I myself have lost 11 due to my c.worms escapade. Even before the worms I was losing Betta.
How many Betta have you lost and how did they die? Last edited by Allie; October 6th, 2008 at 12:21 PM.

| I've lost two in the past month. Both developed dropsy after only a few weeks of owning them. The most likely cause is organ failure from being mass produced and kept in horrible conditions before they came to me. Because of this I've decided to not buy anymore bettas, and focus on puffers instead, and keeping my remaining 4 bettas healthy. Last edited by pinkfloydpuffer; October 6th, 2008 at 12:25 PM.

| I lost a few during/right after my move (most of them older... probably just couldn't handle the stress as well). Other than that, not too many problems... though with new wilds and thai fish and all, hopefully I won't find they brought fresh new diseases (already had my first 2 cases of velvet in over a year) |

| I have lost 9 since I started keeping bettas in March:
Ruby: lost her to an unfortunate accident with the siphon during a water change
Oro and Cielo: died two days after bringing them home (I believe they were sick before I got them.
Pices: do not know what killed him. Died 1 week after brining him home.
Bubbles, Buddy, Dusty: died of velvet (were in a divided tank together)
Bijou: died of whatever mystery disease killed my plecos
Zeus: tumor
Currently the rest of my bettas are healthy and I hope to keep them this way. I have learned my lessons (no more divided tanks). |

| Wow a lot of loses so far. Congrats to those who haven't lost any...hopefully they will last their full life span. I am hoping the 3 I have now will last a really long time compared to the others.
I had one Betta last from June 06 to June 07...the rest were all weeks, months if I was lucky. |

| I've had mine since early July and so far so good. I just upgraded him to a 12 gallon tank with some cories a couple of weeks ago and so far he seems to be loving it. |

| I was surprised to see the results of this poll. I really thought I would read about a lot of Betta deaths, but was happy to see that it is not really the case at all. The majority of the posters have lost 0 bettas followed by 1 loss, and a few 2 loses and only 3 folks with 4 or more loses.
The poll shows the votes at 0 loses are even with the votes for 1-3 loses. The higher the number to vote on loses had only 1 votes each.
For me it shows the situation is not as dire as it may seem to a few. We take to heart when we loose a Betta or hear of a Betta buddy on the board has lost one of their own, and it can seem that there are a lot of Betta deaths going on, but if the poll is any indication, it is not so.
Personally, I think that Betta fish has to be one of the easiest fish to care for and that comes from my own experience with them. They are hardy and they have survived all kinds of 'human' mistakes I have made in the beginning. Of my original Betta's that I brought home 19 months ago, I have only lost one, last week to tumors. My youngest is Midas, who I brought home five months ago, he is doing great in his divided tank with Glory who Ive had for about 17 months. Precious my oldest is still alive. And these are just Petsmart Betta's, not top of the line...show betta's, Bettas from breeders etc etc.
My point is, from what I am reading, other than deaths from c. worms... and tumors, which are unavoidable, most folks Betta's are doing pretty well.
And I'd rather stay with that positive note! |

| I dunno, that's still over 50% of us who have lost bettas, that seems like alot to me, especially when they really should live like 3 years or so. |

| I lost 2 earlier this year to fungus. I bought two beautiful new girls that were kept in the same tank (with other girls). The one was little and fat and the other was slim and beautiful. On the second day the little fat one started getting 'fuzzy'. Her scales were beginning to peel off so I immediately took action. Unfortunately, she died on the 4th day. But between day 1-4 the other little girl (who was in a separate tank) got the same thing. And she died despite my efforts as well. I assume they had contracted it at the pet store, because when I went back there i saw another little girl with the same disease. I warned the shop keeper and they immediately separated her for treatment.
Poor little girls. I enjoyed them while they lasted. I buried both under my dogwood tree. |

| Ofcourse not, but as I said before, I coudn't understand how it happened. Most probably, one of them jumped out the other's part. And after the fight, one of them jumped to other part back. When first I saw them after the fight, they had changed their sides. And they were injured. |
