The reason that many of us avoid it is because it is a weak version of the stuff that's in MelaFix and PimaFix. The oil stimulates healing in pretty much all fish (including bettas). The concern that we have is that this oil also happens to coat the labyrinth organ, thus blocking the ability to breathe. Since bettas need to breathe both air and water, the more concentrated versions will outright kill a betta. Some of us don't want to take the chance with the weaker stuff, since a weak betta may not be able to handle the impact.
A similar debate is happening with dogs and garlic. Garlic has some extremely potent healing qualities for canines, but it also has a chemical that messes with the way the body regulates itself. Some people think that, because the chemical is low doses, it's worth the small amount of harm, others feel that it's too big of a risk. It's just a personal choice.
It all comes down to balancing things and making an educated decision. You're doing the right thing and asking questions. In the case of fin rot, you've got three treatment options (okay, there's probably more, but three common ones); salt, anti-fungus, and bettafix. All three of them are harmful in at least one way, so it's not like any one of them is the obviously superior choice.
