New Dragon boy arrived yesterday on a Harley!

My gorgeous new yellow and white dragon OHM boy came into Seattle on Monday, but I couldn't get in touch with the transhipper, Jeff Wilson, until yesterday. He told me that I had "one gorgeous fish" ready and even offered to deliver him! He said he would put the fish in his saddlebag on his Harley and drive him up to the city!!
Everyone thought the poor thing was dead when he got here-- he was so pale and still after all the traveling he had to do to get to me... but after a couple of hours of acclimating to his tank, I soon set him free. Last night he was listless and stayed pretty much to the bottom of the tank, but this morning he is swimming around happily, and was VERY glad to see his breakfast!!

I am a bit upset because his back fin is REALLY torn up-- about half of it missing, as a matter of fact. He is showing no signs of illness, infection or disease, so I think that either he got nipped, or he chewed his own tail from the stress. I'm helping two of my other newer boys, Shandy & Tang, to recover from massive fin damage from a too-powerful filter intake at the LFS, and they are making great improvements, so I'm confident in my ability to heal my new boy, but it really makes me sick to see that big, gorgeous tail in such bad shape!!

He's really much brighter and more golden than his photos showed him to be. He's quite stunning... even in his rough shape, he's been much admired by all of my flatmates since he arrived. His pictures just did not do him justice!

He looks pretty awful at the moment. The fin damage is enough to make me want to cry. But he's awfully perky this morning, which I was so happy to see; I've been worried sick about him since I bought him!

Congratulations, Devon. I would say from the sounds of his travels your assessment of his chewing his tail may just be correct so he has probably had quite a harassing time of it. I would treat him quite gently and hold off on much picture taking until he gets very calm. As much as we want to see him, it sounds like he has had a rough time of it. Otherwise he sounds lovely and we will wait patiently and thankfully to see him.

Thanks, Rose. I've given him plenty of soft little hiding places with the option of coming to the front if he's feeling social. So far, he has been all inquisitive and curious, peering out at anyone that walks by. He acts nothing today like the shy, frightened, damaged little guy he was last night. He's going to be getting garlic and water changes every day for the next little bit; I hope to have him in tip-top shape very soon!

I can see why the pictures didn't do him justice. Even though the breeder pic you posted made him look gorgeous, he must be astonishingly beautiful "in person," even with his poor shredded tail. Hopefully you'll be able to capture his full beauty and some of his dragon-with-a-'tude personality on camera when he's ready for the disturbance. If he's anything like mine, he won't be camera-shy at all and will pose with all kinds of expressions for you, but will present a challenge to get a perfect picture of his shimmering good looks.

Must have been scary to see his condition upon arrival and I'm glad he perked up so well the next day. Hope his tail heals quickly!

Update: he's coming out of his shell a lot more and is friendly but still somewhat cautious. He's moving around a lot easier and I even caught him playing in the water flow of his filter last night! He's continuing to colour up and eat like a little piggy (he's figured out that I am the one with the food... he is starting to learn to be very happy to see me. ) This weekend I plan to shoot some photos of him, even though it kills me to look at that mess of a tail -- I want some good "before & after" shots.

Betta on a harley... I can see how he might have lost a bit of tail like that. Best of luck with him and I can't wait to see some pics.
