No Male Bettas together! Eventually they will discover each other and tear each other up! Better to keep them seperate in 2.5 - 3 Gallon Aquariums.

If you want two male bettas, buy a tank divider (for the 10g) and give them 5g each.

Keep the water about an inch below the divider so they don't jump over to fight each other.

It's advised that 2 betta splendens not be kept together, especially is a 10g.
They will probably fight and someone will get maimed or killed.

I've read a lot of horror stories about people trying to keep them together.

That being said, we do have memebers with many years of experience who have kept different species of bettas together in large tanks. However, these are not betta splendens, which is the species you find in the local market.

I would strongly advise against it.

I know it's disappointing, wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to keep those beautiful creatures together?

Goldfish shouldn't be kept in a 10g. It's recommended you have 20g for the first gold fish and 10 additional gallons for 2.

Guppies are beautiful little fish and would do well in a 10g. If you don't want babies choose either all male or all female.
That's a good choice.

One betta would love a 10g. I have mine in a 10g and she loves it. They're very personable fish and will get attached quickly to your nieces.
Several members has successfully kept a couple of cories or ottos with them, but whether your betta will accept them is up to the betta's personality.

The male Guppies have the long colorful tails...The females have far less color...

Males generally are more brightly colored and have longer tails. They're also generally smaller than the females.

I'm going to surprise a lot of you out there. I know of a pet shop here in my town that, which surprises even me that they have two male Bettas together in one tank. I know this isn't supposed to be, but this is some freak of nature that happened. The pet store owner told me that he keeps one Betta free in the tank and the rest in small water baskets. Well one jumped out and is with the other free one and believe it or not they get along. One is a little aggressive while the other is timid, which also surprises me. They are both veil tail splendens and I am telling you this really baffles me. I am not saying to go and by two to put together after reading and the advices I have received please don't do this. My two males are extremely aggressive and would tear the tanks apart to get to each other. Just wanted to share this anomaly that is really interesting to me. I have a 10g tank with 4 guppy males and 2 platy males and are very attractive here is some pics to give an example of what can be done. Good luck.

Be aware that if you buy female livebearers (guppies, mollies, platies, swordtails, etc) they may have already been kept with a male while sexually mature. If they were insemenated they can drop that batch of fry and continue dropping fry for upwards of 6 months, because they store sperm for that 6 month period. The stored sperm is used, by the female, to reinsemenate itself.

Safer to go with all male, but the livebearers tend to eat their fry. Females get a round belly and tend to not have as much color on the body, in the lower quality strains like the chain stores have, as the males do.

That is nice of you to get your nieces something nice, and be willing to do it responsibly as well!

Hope they enjoy it.

You could have 8 guppies in there. If you don't want babies get all males. If you want babies...2 males and 6 females should get you babies no doubt.
